Wrong choice in good restaurant?
I met an old friend (who can drink) here and we went for two fishy pastas and had same main courses of veal steak. We first asked the waitress - as the menu was not clear - if punters normally found this too much - the pastas were labelled primi, as if for a first course, but about £10, hence our confusion. The lady suggested half portions for the pasta. I found the Spaghetti Alla Bottarga, a "national" dish, a bit of an acquired taste. It tasted more of sweat and olive oil than anything fishy. The Vermention white wine was good though, and my pal seemed happy with his crabmeat pasta. The veal steaks were large and tasty but didnt settle well with the bottarga for me. The Red wine made from Carignan grapes "Grotta" was unusual. I liked its brambliness and rusticity, but pal and I were left a little sad we hadnt traded up to Rocca Rubia, an old fave, but £37 here.
By now - about 8pm - the place was getting crowded and we stayed a while longer drinking coffee. There was no hassle to leave, which can be a pain in london. I would go again, but would probably try a normal starter than a pasta, certainly if having the veal, or maybe a fish main course next.
