I'm not sure who I am writing this review for ... if you live around here, you probably know about La Luna already (what am I saying? you probably have a favourite table), and if you don't ... well, what review would be strong enough to get you down the Walworth Road? (I like it round here, but I know it has an image problem.)

But it's worth saying - La Luna has excellent food, good prices, and lovely staff - you're guaranteed a friendly welcome and a good evening out (or in, if you're getting a takeaway to eat in front of the telly...)

If you were wandering around Chinatown looking for a place to eat, Chinese Experience might not be the one you would go for - very plain windows, canteen-style feel to the dining room, and a menu with photos... But if you are interested in delicious food, and a range of choices which you don't see in other Chinese restaurants, you should definitely choose this one. I'm sure everything on the menu is excellent, but I have always ordered from the "Chef's specialities" on the menu, or the "this month's recommendations" (a separate laminated page, with the heading only in Chinese - fortunately the dishes are also described in English) - and it has always been fantastic...

Excellent coffee (they also sell beans) and friendly service. The breakfasts also look fantastic - there is butter and pots of jam on the long central table, for you to help yourself... the only problem is that every time I've got there every space is already occupied!

I agree - decent food, a good bar (although pricey), good club nights (full of trendy geeks ... or geeky trendsetters...) and somewhere you can have a nice drink and still hear yourself think! (increasingly important to me these days).

There's also a very interesting bookshop (I sometimes pop in during my lunch hour and pretend to myself I am an art student rather than a paper-pusher) and of course an excellent selection of movies.

overpriced for the quality
I also fell in love with Le Pain Quotidien during a trip to Brussels - I liked the relaxed atmosphere, the huge salad platters and the excellent, simple and good quality food. Every time I am in Belgium I try and go again.

So I was really excited to see that branches were opening in London. I was a bit shocked when I saw the prices - the same in pounds as the Brussels branch would charge in Euros - but I accepted that this was London, and nice bits of London at that, and I thought that it would be worth it.

I was really disappointed by what turned up - we got bog-standard salads, with none of the high-quality ingredients that I was expecting. I had the antipasti platter - I could have made a nicer one myself after a quick trip round Sainsbury's - and my friend had the seafood salad - limp lettuce leaves and defrosted prawns.

Such a pity - if it was as good as the ones in Belgium, I would be eating there every week!
