Keiths Food and Wine Bar
One of my very favourite places. We'll travel the 20+ miles on a Sunday to get the veggie roast dinner. Buzzing 'bohemiam' type place on the doorstep of Sefton Park with friendly staff and a real easy going atmosphere. Quite extensive food and drinks list. Have a coffee or go for the full blow out roast dinner and glass of wine. Seems to be what was an old terraced house which has been opened up to make various different spaces with a mish mash of wooden tables and chairs. Take the Sunday papers, relax and enjoy.

Ground floor bar and first floor cafe and gallery. Good food and drink if you can get a seat. Open 7 days a week and v.busy at weekends. Also has a bookshop and is part of the Cornerhouse cinema which has 3 screens showing mainly arthouse films.

Tea rooms in lovely setting in part of the old Astley Sanitarium. Sounds grim but a hard working group saved this really nice building from demolition/being built on. Usual customers are middle aged/elderly ladees who lunch. Gorgeous cakes and gateaux, fresh pots of tea and that sort of thing. Some hot food such as quiche, baked spuds etc. Non smoking. Have your fill then wander round the lake and watch the ducks and squirrels. Pity that part of the grounds are now covered with houses but suppose that's how they were able to raise the money to finance the renovation.

Tidgy little pub which has some decent beers. Standard DJ at weekends which my friends used to call the underwater disco because the sound was so muffled. Gets busy probably because it's so small and there's not much choice in the town

Not been for years but bet it's exactly the same. Standard fare from 70's - prawn cocktails, egg mayonnaise starters, steak and chips - you can guess the rest of the menu I'm sure. Freshly cooked but unadventurous but this is what their loyal customers want. I'd say the majority have frequented this place since it opened. Not my idea of a good place to eat but to give them their due it does well.

Standard small local pub. Good freshly cooked home made food and 'proper' chips. Food on lunchtimes, early evenings and all weekend. Very clean and friendly. Tiny beer garden

Enormous Wetherspoons pub which was formerly a cinema. Does the usual cheap and (these days not so)cheerful food. Called in last week (March 07) and we won't rush back. Tables left uncleared of glasses, bottles, full ashtrays, serviettes etc etc. 50 mins for food to arrive. We only waited as we fancied their cashew nut roast with all the trimmings but wish we'd not bothered. All in all a pretty unpleasant experience. This is smack bang in the middle of the city and gives would leave a bad taste in the mouth for visitors/tourists.

Bawadi cafe/restaurant
Fantastic Lebanese/Middle Eastern cafe/restaurant few minutes walk from from MEN Arena. Food is delicious although we only tried the veggie dishes others have praised the meat ones. The in-house baked flat breads are gorgeous. BYO makes it very affordable. Lots of wood and exposed brickwork. Shisha pipes. Lovely staff.

This has been closed for renovation for quite some time. Rumour has it (we hope) that it'll reopen. Fabulous music venue in smallish Victorian place. Always a good atmosphere. Over the years it's had more than it's fair share of brilliant musicians both national and world music. Crap beer though.
