As the name would suggest, this is an Indian restaurant and take away. Situated in Ticklemore Street. Probably best used as a takeaway as the restaurant is very small and woefully quiet. We have been the only people in there on most nights we have been.

The food is very good though, both eat in and take away. The takeaway has a free delivery service on orders over a particular value, but I can't remember what that value is. You can order take away and sit in the bar and have a drink while you wait for it to be cooked. The downside is there isn't much parking around there

The restaurant is a more 'typical' Indian restaurant as it it quite dark.

This restaurant has now changed from being an Italian restaurant to being a Thai and Chinese restaurant, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is called.

I went there when it first opened and I have to say it really was rather good!

Reasonably priced and good food. Very friendly staff too.

Since then I have heard nothing but bad reports so we have never been back, Rumour wine bar is just a few yards down the hill and up in the narrows there is Cafe India if you fancy something spicey!

Probably one to avoid as there are better options close by.

White Hart
Havn't been here for a while now but I believe it still has a good reputation.

The White Hart is situated with the Dartington Hall complex which is well worth a visit, the gardens there are fabulous!

Overall the little pub there is rather good, lots of outside tables for those who like to sit outside and more tables inside. Please note, this is not a large pub so well worth booking so as not to be dissapointed.

Food has always been good, every time I have been anyhow. Staff are great.

There does tend to be a few students around the place - The White Hart is an extremely local 'local' for after study drinks.

Seven Stars
Not a bad place for a drink, there is a decent sized outdoor area which is great for people watching but it is also by the roundabout at the bottom of the High Street so there are a few cars around too.

This has two bars, a more traditional one and a trendier Bar Seven, which is leather chairs and sofa's etc.

I have never eaten in either of the two bars so I am not able to comment on them.

I have however eaten in the new restaurant and to honest wasn't particularly impressed. The restaurant looks over towards to the bus station and the food wasn't up to the prices being charged I felt.

The Riverside
Not a bad place this, it is on the river opposite Vire Island.

The food is very good in the restaurant part, local ingredients etc. Have had some very nice meals in there in recent years. The restaurant is a nice place to be but it can get very hot in there if it is busy.

There are a couple of downsides though. The outside area doesn't get much sunshine and none at all after 'office' hours, if you want a drink in the sun after work, walk a bit further along the river and go to the Steam Packet.

The other slight downside is that some of the customers in the bar and outside can be a bit 'chavvy'. I'm no snob but there can be too many white track suits and thick fake gold chains around the place.

What a sad tale this is. If you go back 10 years or more this pub was huge success, it's a shadow of it's former self now.

Lovely building though, thatched roof and dates back to the eleven hundreds I think. Has quite a large beer garden but it doesn't get much sun (when those of that work want it!).

I think this pub has suffered from to many changes in ownership in recent years, both private individuals and pub chains.

The food isn't what it used to be and the interior of the pub is looking very tired these days.

Great for a day time drink in the sun, but not worth a visit for anything else in my view.

Steam Packet
This pub is named after the 'steam packet' boats that used to bring mail up to Totnes, Totnes is the furthest in land you can go by boat due to wiers etc above the town.

Tends to be a summer drinking venue for us as there is a huge outdoor area with a fabulous view over the rive and Vire Island.

Just a normal pub really, normal pub prices for drinks etc.

Friendly staff.

In recent years they have built on a large conservatory style dining room which again offers views of the river and Vire Island.

Have had lunch there a few times and have always been pleased. Eaten the evening there once and was hugely dissapointed, I would waste my money eating there again.

Not my favourite pub in the area I have to say, but there's nothing particularly wrong with it, I just prefer other places.

Nice 'old' bar as you walk in, wooden floors, wooden chairs and tables etc. Now, I think, most of these downstairs tables have been given over to people eating rather than drinking.

Upstairs they have opened a new 'cocktail' bar, again with a seating area for people eating in there. This bar is a startling contrast to the original pub, very, very light, chrome fittings, glass and light wood. There is a door way leading out into a small beer garden. There is a happy hour six pm to seven pm I think on a Saturday when the cocktails are half price or something.

Have eaten there twice I think and found it very dissapointing. The second time it was great but then friends of ours who have been again more recently said they were dissapointed.

I can't put in to words how much I love this bar and restaurant.

It's certainly my favourite bar and eatery in Totnes, The South Hams and possibly the Country!

It has a great mix of customers, young students, thirty somethings, middle aged and pensioners. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights have a very lively atmosphere, but not so loud you can't have a conversation.

Have eaten in there on a couple of Sunday nights too. Very different but very pleasant.

The staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable too.

Great menu with vegetarian options, there's a fantastic pizza menu too which is amazingly popular. Pizza and fried etc can be ordered to take away too but there is no discount for takeaway so if there is an available table why not eat in?

The Barrel House
I have never really been able to get my head around this place, despite living in the town for nearly ten years. I've been in a few times, but only a hand full of times and eaten there only the once.

Some people probably find the interior 'cool' or 'arty' or something. Personally I find it scruffy and uncomfortable.

I don't understand the opening and closing times either. Sometimes the place closes at six pm, even if the place is busy.

It is a live music venue too, which is great if that's your thing but if you have booked a table to have something to eat I would imagine it would be rather annoying.

On the occasion I did eat there, the food was very good! Not as good as Rumour, but not as expensive either!
