My partner and I visited The Woodman in July this year and we were very impressed. Hailing from Newcastle, we are used to having a city full of good pubs, and Durham didn't disappoint. We were staying at a Travelodge up the road in Gilesgate, which is situated 5 minutes away from The Woodman. The pub looks small from the outside, but it's deceptively large inside. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and the drinks weren't too expensive at all. The cider was lovely, as was the snakebite. There's a pool table, darts board and jukebox in the pub, which is decorated in a traditional manner. The Woodman was very cosy with a friendly atmosphere - we'd definitely visit again.

I visited Studio for the only time earlier this year, for a friend's brother's 18th birthday party. Fisrt of all, the staff were great - they were very strict and even I was ID'd at the door, at the age of 23! They also wouldn't serve drinks to anyone unless they showed their ID at the bar. We had a very funny and entertaining night - the music was good, very dancey and typical of your average 18th birthday party, but very enjoyable all the same. The bottles of lager and VK weren't too expensive, and the upstairs area where the party was held was huge. We retired to the smaller downstairs area after the party, which wasn't quite as entertaining as upstairs.

I love The Black Bull! The drive up to Corbridge is beautiful and when you arrive at the pub, it's a very impressive, traditional old building. The staff are really friendly and welcoming as we were shown straight to a table. The decor inside the pub gives the place a friendly, cosy, traditional atmosphere and we loved it! We ordered a gammon steak and scampi, which was served in a very acceptable 20 minutes. The food was gorgeous - my gammon was beautifully lean and my friend's scampi was also delicious. The drinks were very reasonably priced - under £3.50 for a large glass of wine and in the region of £2.70 for a pint of cider. The food was also great value - the portions were large and the food of fantastic quality. We'll definitely be going back!

I used to drink in The Quilted Camel when I was about 18 and hadn't been in here for years, until a few weeks ago. The decor is really nice - quite glamourous, with lots of different fabrics. I visited on a Tuesday night and unsuprisingly it was very quiet. There were a range of offers available, including treble spirits for £3, which we of course took advantage of! The prices of the other dirnks were rather expensive - nothing compared to the £1.75 cocktails that I used to consume on a Monday night, back in 2003! At the back of the bar, there's also now a large bed, which looked wonderfully inviting...

Lovely Grub
Tandoori Nights is situated on one of the most beautiful streets in Newcastle. Dean Street is home to a number of fantastic buildings, giving Tandoori Nights a great setting. The restaurant is small but not cramped and the staff are wonderfully attentive. The menu is wide and varied, with reasonable prices. Being boring, I always go for the Chicken Tikka Masalla, which really is very tasty. The Garlic Naan Bread is also gorgeous, especially when teamed with Garlic Pilau Rice. Regretfully I've never tried any of the desserts - although they always look really nice, I've never had any room left for them!

Clear bar is one of our usual haunts whenever my friends and I descend upon Newcastle for a night out. Situated close to Central Station and major shopping areas, Clear is a small and narrow bar with a nice (if a bit small) outdoor area for smokers. The music played in here on a weekend is very funky and the bar really does get rammed. One of the only things that puts me off about Clear is the fact that it gets so busy - it's definitely not for anybody who is at all claustrophobic. There are a range of offers on during the night though, if you feel that you can brave the crowds.

The Board Inn is situated on the main road, between Ryton and Blaydon. Stella is a small area and the main catchment area for The Board Inn. The pub itself has ample parking at the front of the building and is attractive to look at. The bar is a lot larger than it looks outside and has a pool table, darts board and TVs situated around the pub. There's lots of seating and a large bar area, which has happy hour offers on throughout the day. Usually quiet, The Board Inn has a pleasant outdoor area and is a nice bar to drop in to for a quiet pint.

The Fox and Hounds is a really cosy little pub, slap bang in the middle of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it village of Coalburns. It's situated just off the road and has a small car park attached. The pub itself is small but cosy, with a really friendly atmosphere. The Fox stocks a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and
they also do food, including Sunday lunches. The drive to Coalburns is really nice and it would also be a lovely walk (or pub crawl!) from Greenside or one of the other surrounding villages. I don't know of any public transport that goes through Coalburns, so it may be difficult to get to if you don't want to walk or take a car.

I really liked The Castle, but I wasn't too keen on the prices. The cider was gorgeous and the staff were really friendly, but being used to Newcastle prices, I thought paying over £3 for a pint was rather excessive! However, the pub was lovely and the beer garden even nicer - the weather was boiling and it was lovely to sit outside with a cold pint in hand. The food at The Castle is also very nice - the fish burger especially. The pub was very very busy at about 6pm on a Thursday night, with people finishing work and popping in for a drink and a bite to eat.

I visited The Mitre with a couple of friends whilst on holiday in Cambridge in July, and I've got to say that I wasn't unimpressed. The pub was pleasant, both inside and out, and served a wide and delicious range of food. I even bought a jar of chutney to take home with me! The chicken pie was gorgeous, as was the platter that my companions ordered. The price of a pint of cider was very reasonable for Cambridge, as we found the majority of pubs very, very expensive. The atmosphere in the pub was good and the staff were friendly and happy.
