What's not to love about Pompoko?
It's billed as home-cooked Japanese - and it makes a great lunch option or place to fill up before a night out. Rice dishes are tasty and enormously filling - and served with astonishing speed. There's also the usual side - endamame, gyoza, teriyaki skewers.

You can take your own booze in and it's even cheaper than chips.

Went as a treat today. Have been before and loved it but this time we didn't order til after 2.30 - which meant that the Roast Beef main was very disappointing. It was obvious that the roast potatoes and yorkshire pud had been cooked some time ago - they were tough and stale tasting. When I mentioned this they didn't apologise or offer anything off the bill (even though the roast was an extra £3 on top of the set lunch price). It's a shame as the starter, beef and side veg were all lovely. When I mentioned this to a friend she said that she had similarly unresponsive service. I probably won't go again as I think that they shouldn't serve food that's past its best - just take it off the menu or don't take a late booking. Also, it doesn't take much to turn a disgruntled customer into a happy one - you just have to care about your reputation.

Set lunch costs £20 per head, also had a half bottle of Rioja for £16 and water at £3. Not a cheap treat!

Fab decor and equally good food right on the 7 Dials. There;s even a takeaway service for Bento Boxes at home. Ramen is great, as is tempura, which means I can't review the sushi as I've never got round to trying it. They do a lovely plum wine spritzer too.

I'm not a natural coffee drinker, but Red Roaster does the best Latte in town. It's slightly shabby, and sometimes displays some truly awful local artwork, but it legendary for the quality of the coffee. You better know your Americano from your Espresso though as the counter staff can be pretty sniffy if you don't!

Formal fine dining - great for a splurge
Pretty formal atmosphere - although more relaxed (and better value) at lunch time when they do a set lunch menu. In the evening it's best behaviour time, but the food is worth it. They make their own bread and petit-fours and the most amazing amuse bouches. It's not very big and the tables feel quite close together when they're full. The service is very attentive, which can be a bit off-putting if you're looking for intimacy - but go for the foodie extravaganza and you won't be let down.

This is my favourite place to eat thai in Brighton. Their massoman curry is fantastic, as are the peppered crispy squid rings. It's really reasonably priced and incredibly tasty. It gets busy though, so best to get in there early. Love the prawn crackers and sweet chilli dipping sauce - especially on a hot day when you can go out the back into the yard behind.
