The cluny is down ouseburn. It has a good ale selection and frequent live music and gigs. The bar is nice enough, and as a gig venue it is very good, quite small so lots of atmosphere. Lighting and sound quality are average to good.

One down side is that the cluny is quite isolated from other places to go out in Newcastle upon tyne, although if you have a car then this is not a problem. But walking there from the station is a bit of a trek. All in all though I recommend this place – great for gigs and for its drink selection.

the hexham tans is on st mary's chare in hexham, a street more commonly known as back street. it serves vegetarian (and fish/ seafood) dishes, including hot food, sandwiches, scones, cakes etc, as well as hot and cold drinks.
the tans is run in association with a mental health project and many of its staff are young people with mental health problems or learning difficulties. an effect of this is that service can sometimes be slow, though of course if you are in a hurry you can just let them know. all the staff are lovely and i've never had a problem with service there. the scones are great too!

The life centre is in time square in Newcastle so is ideally situated if you are arriving by train. Just turn left out of the main station exit and you’ll see the giant logo. In fact I think there are signs from inside the station portico.

The centre for life is a science museum which has a great number of modern exhibitions. It also has a good little café and every winter an outdoor skating rink is set up outside its doors which is very popular. The museum itself is popular, especially with school trips.

As the life museum is a bit on the pricey side, for an alternative why not check out the Newcastle discovery museum, a free science museum with more of a local focus?

Serving up the very best in (yes, you guessed it) smoothies and wraps, this little café is nice, if poky. You can also get take away and I’d recommend this over sitting in because it really is rather small in there and it feels like the waitressing staff are peering over your shoulder (even though they’re probably not). Plenty of veggie options and the staff are very helpful. Pretty much any of the meat options can be ordered with tofu as an alternative. The bright green spinach wraps are my personal favourite, as is any wrap with rice and soy sauce. Only bugbear is that its pricey, but still preferable to national chain prêt a manger.

Great little bar which, as well as being an excellent night time venue or place to start the evening before heading on to a club, also does fantastic pub food. Enough vegetarian options to keep the fussy happy as well as a great selection of classic meaty dishes. the forth is easy to spot – look out for the red front and people spilling out the doors. It does get VERY busy and this is the only down side in my opinion. my brother first introduced me to this place and now I love it too! It has got great atmosphere and is very pleasant inside too. Recommended!

well. i'm not even a teenager any more, but i used to come here all the time as a kid and my boyfriend and i went back last year to see how the discovery museum had changed. it as been revamped and is a bit more technologically savvy these days, with lots of interactive and computerised exhibits. very child-friendly but plenty for the adults to look at and enjoy too. it is very large - getting round in one day may be ambitious, especially if you have younger children. but the major advantage of the museum being free is that you can pop back any time you like to look at things again. perfect for when your child just has to see one small element of the exhibition again!

independent cinema at its best
the tyneside serves up a mix of art house films and more mainstream commercial fodder. it's just had a massive overhaul and was temporarily housed in gateshead but is back in its original location. downstairs is a good little cafe/bar which does awesome old- fashioned lemonade. the screens themselves may seem small if you're used to odeon multiplexes, but do not let that put you off. the tyneside has heaps of character and its locals are rightly proud of it. the usual snacks, sweets, popcorn are available and at slightly better prices than you would find in a megabucks national chain - cheapskates may still want to bring their own though. staff are helpful and extremely knowledgable.

digital is distinctive with its red on black logo. it is quite a large club with a world- class sound system. popular with student and locals alike, this club has a friendlier vibe than its brighton equivalent. monday nights are 'born in the eighties' featuring 80p drinks offers and 80p entry for those (you guessed it) born in the 1980s. get there before midnight though or the price is cranked up to £5 entry (£4 for students with NUS). drinks generally are on the pricy side but the sound system is awesome and the dancefloor not to be missed. an awesome night out all in all.

This is a lovely little cafe serving hot and cold food, sandwiches, coffee, smoothies and cold drinks. I've been going there for years - it used to be unpleasant as a non-smoker due to the smoking area not being partitioned off, but now it's very pleasant in there. The atmosphere is bustling and often crowded. There are lots of sandwiches (hot and cold) with a fair selection of veggie options. Coffee is good, as are the smoothies. There is also outside seating available. Blakes does take - aways or is ideal for lunch in. My only criticism is that sometimes it can be a bit dingy and dark, but otherwise it is a very nice cafe.
