The King & Miller
The King & Miller is a large out-of-town pub situated just at the side of the busy A38 road, at the junction with the Kingsmill Hospital and nearby the Kingsmill Reservoir. There is a McDonalds drive-through next door and a large B&Q store opposite.

The pub itself is set back from the road in pleasant gardens with plenty of parking spaces. Traffic noise from the busy dual carriageway is still a slight annoyance though if you're sitting out in the beer garden. The gardens are very pleasant to relax in during the summer months and their are plenty of tables.

Although the pub is a fairly new building, it is decorated to look much older than it actually is. This gives it a nice, relaxing, comfortable ambience.

The pub is part of the Hardys & Hansons pub chain, so if you've been into another one of their establishments, you'll know what to expect.

The food is excellent quality, I can't fault it. The steaks are particularly good. The menu contains a broad range of traditional dishes. The portions are exceptionally generous and the prices are most fair for what you get.

Highly recommended.

The Snipe
The Snipe is a typical family pub located just off the A38 on the road into Sutton-in-Ashfield. The pub overlooks the busy dual carriageway so if you're sitting out in the beer garden, you can expect to hear the noise from the traffic below.

The pub is large and open plan, with plenty of seats. The decor and furnishings are clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly, professional and efficient. They don't skimp on the measures and you don't get ignored if you're standing at the bar waiting to order a drink.

The pub is best known as being a venue to have a meal. They have an excellent menu with a wide range of traditional dishes, all are excellent quality. Prices are slightly on the higher side of reasonable value, but the portions are generous and the food is tasty. They have a good range of deserts and cater well for children, with plenty of kids' options.

The Castlewood
The Castlewood is a typical family pub, particularly catering for families with small children. It is located just off the M1 motorway at junction 28, accessible by taking the A38 road towards Mansfield and then the first turn on the left.

The pub is very pleasant inside, with nice furnishings and decor, plenty of seats and well-maintained and clean. The toilets are always clean and regularly checked.

The pub features both indoor and outdoor play areas for children and there are staff on hand to look after the kids and keep them entertained whilst you enjoy a nice meal.

The menu has a good selection of traditional pub meals and the prices aren't bad, but a little on the high side for what you get.

It's a nice place to enjoy a quiet drink in the evening and it rarely gets busy. You're most likely to meet business men having a drink there whilst they stay in the nearby Swallow Hotel.

USA Express Chicken
This fast food outlet is located in the main market place of the town centre, opposite the sundial.

It's exactly what you'd expect it to be, namely low-priced fast food, mainly chicken dishes and fries, although they do a range of burgers too.

The actual chicken is quite nice, I prefer it to KFC and I think it's better value. It's certainly cheaper and they use a nice mix of spices in their batter which gives their food a distinct character.

There aren't really any other kinds of food on the menu, just fried chicken, but then you wouldn't really expect that, would you, given then name!

Market Plaice Fish Restaurant
This is one of the two best fish and chip shops in Sutton-in-Ashfield, but this one has soemthing going for it the other one hasn't, a large cafe-style seating area. The shop is located in the bustling town market place, which makes it popular with shoppers keen to sit down and enjoy a nice lunch.

The menu has everything that you'd expect from a chip shop, and the fish and chips are excellent quality. The chips have the reputation locally of being the best in Sutton.

The portions are enormous and even just a small portion of chips is enough to feed two normal sized persons! Service is friendly and swift, but as mentioned before, it is popular so expect to queue at lunchtimes (although you'll never be waiting too long).

The King's Head
The King's Head pub is also a hotel and is located in the town centre of Melton Mowbray, in the pedestrianised area, just off from the market place.

The pub has a quiet, relaxed feel to it, with pleasant decor and surroundings and lots of interesting little seating areas where you can retreat with your drink.

At the weekends, it does fill up though and gets very busy, but it's generally speaking, not a place where people stay out for the evening, they tend to just pass through it for an hour or two as they work their way through the many small pubs and bars located nearby on the traditional town pub route.

There is a good range of drinks, reasonably priced and the food is of a very good quality, although the menu is somewhat limited. There's usually a good selection of local ales which are well worth sampling.

Half Moon Inn
The Half Moon is a small, but popular bar located in the centre of Melton Mowbray, just off from the market place. It forms one of a string of pubs that are generally included on a pub crawl of the town centre, all being within a short walk of each other.

The pub itself is small, but comfortable, although somewhat dark and the floor is unlevel in places (this is an old building) so watch where you're treading! You'll often find a few drunken locals in there, even during the daytime, so it's not to everyone's taste and is very much a "local's" pub. That said however, the staff are friendly and if you strike up a conversation with the locals, you'll find them generally friendly too
(although perhaps a little worse for wear!)

The Red Lion
The Red Lion is a small, but thriving pub located on the main high street of Hucknall. It is popular with the locals as a place to enjoy a few drinks and the owners enjoy a good reputation locally, always organising various events in the community. The staff are friendly and efficient and I really can't fault them.

The pub itself is quite small, but very cosy, with lots of little nooks and crannies to sneak away into where you can enjoy a pint or a nice relaxing chat with friends.

There is a large pool area at the back of the pub, always popular with the punters.

The pub runs various special nights from karaoke to quiz nights and there's always something happening to keep you entertained. The drinks are pretty cheap to. Only downside to all this, is it does get very busy on Friday and Saturday nights and can get pretty rowdy.

Wetherspoons
This is a typical Wetherspoons pub, centrally located just off from the market place, near the bus station. The pub is a converted cinema so benefits from high ceilings and large windows with plenty of light flooding in.

There are a couple of fruit machines scattered about the place and a good quiz machine where you can win cash. There are plenty of tables, but even so, it can be difficult to get a seat during peak times at lunchtimes and weekends.

You'll often find the place full of people out to get merry, even during daytime hours and don't be surprised to have to fight your way through a crowd of smokers and cigarette butts littering the doorway on your entrance.

Once inside though, it's pleasant enough.

The food is typical Wetherspoons, all pre-prepared and pretty much just reheated. A bit tasteless and overpriced in my opinion, but atleast it's a safe bet and you know what to expect.

The drinks are cheap and there's a good range of spirits, ales and wines.

The Tollemache Inn
The Tollemache Inn is the only JD Wetherspoons pub in Grantham. It takes it's name from the Honourable Frederick Tollemache, whose statue stands outside the front doors. Tollemache was the town’s MP for much of the 19th century.

As with most Wetherspoons pubs, you pretty well know what to expect before you even step inside. The pub covers a large area, there are plenty of seats and tables. It is brightly lit with comfortable, welcoming decor and furnishings. There are a smattering of fruit machines and a quiz machine, but this being Wetherspoons, no jukebox.

The menu is standard stuff, the portions are somewhat measily and the food is already prepared and cooked in advance (usually) so it's just a case of taking it out the freezer and heating it up. Somewhat overpriced in my opnion.

The drinks are cheap though and there is a good range of both ales and wines to choose from.
