A great night out
Have been to Jongleurs a couple of times now, both on the student nights (Thursdays - £1 entry, which gets you into the comedy club and then into Jongleurs club later on). Both times, the quality of the acts has been brilliant, really funny. The second time, we also ordered some food, which you can order from the waitress and pay them, and then they bring it. We had a tower thing, with lotsa different snacky things on, and it was really nice.

The good thing about it is you can make it however big a night you want to - if you just want comedy you can leave after the show, but if you want a night out, you also get entry to the club.

Only bit of advice - don't sit at the front.....!

Student bar - but still interesting
Situated just across the road from Aston University and a UCE art campus, this bar is usually full of students, especially on student nights during the week. However, the drinks are reasonably priced, the facilities are good (big screens, pool tables, comfy sofas and a table football game!) and the staff are friendly. They also serve food for a reasonable price, and this is usually of a high standard.

The pub undergoes a facelift pretty much every year, and at the moment has some dubious window coverings, but it does look good and the annual reinvention helps to keep it feeling fresh 'n' funky!

The cocktails can be highly recommended for their alcohol content and there is a good range. I like this bar for pre-going out drinks, or just for a catch-up with your mates.

My fave nightclub
Although quite expensive at the weekends, this is still my fave club. It's a good size (though can get painfully packed on a Monday or Wednesday student night), has different music, and plenty of places to chill out and hear yourselves talk for the first bit of your night.

The cheese room pushes even my limit for cheese though, playing Rock Around the Clock and other dubious 'classics'. There are some gems in and amongst the rotting cheese though!

The best nights here are student nights (NUS only though) as the drinks are reasonable and the crowd is happy

Don't think it lived up to my expectations
We recently went to the Barnt Green Inn for a birthday celebration. I found the atmosphere and menu quite pretentious (chips called "belgian frites"), with choices fairly expensive for what they entailed.

The starters were nice - we shared a Greek platter, and a garlic pizette, and they also brought us some bread, olives and oil as a starter. The main courses were a bit of a let down for about half of the people round the table. I had penne bolognaise and found the sauce almost unbearably rich - it almost tasted salty, as if someone had upended a salt cellar into the pan!

When a member of my party complained that her food was not very nice, they did cook her a new meal. When this was also not considered very ncie, they knocked the meal off the bill which I thought was fair, and redeemed themselves slightly for my meal :)

Overall, the staff were nice, the food was hit and miss and the menu was varied but a bit pretentious. Good if you're in a large group of friends, I think.

San Carlo - I love it!
I've always loved this restaurant and it's always a place I go as a treat. It's not too pricey for the quality of the food and for the feeling that you're in a classy place! Being surrounded by D-list celebs adds a certain ambience - Stan Collymore and his family were sat behind us on my last visit!

The last time I went was for a hen party, where everyone on my table ate a different dish and everyone was fully satisfied with their meal. The wine was lovely and there was a great range, though it can be a bit pricey.

Overall, this is a great restaurant, with a wide range of dishes. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially for a celebration/special meal.
