Manchester Central Travelodge
For a cheap, basic room close to Manchester City Centre try the Manchester Central Travelodge. I stayed at this hotel in 2006 for two nights on one of the saver rates. The rooms were in every way a standard Travelodge room; however they were much larger than normal! Rooms can sleep up to 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children under 16 and are available for £29 if booked in advance. Food is available from the hotel bar, however don’t expect anything fancy – just typical pub food at inflated prices. There are literally dozens of food places within 5 minutes walk of the hotel, and the Arndale Centre is very close if you’re a fan of shopping. For a cheap break in Manchester try booking the Manchester Central Travelodge in conjunction with a MegaTrain ticket!

Grange City Hotel
Ok maybe not the best five star hotel in London but for the price you pay you definitely can't go wrong! Rooms are fairly spacious and offer a mini-bar, air conditioning, computer modem points, digital satellite TV, a music centre and a luxury marble and granite bathroom. The bathrooms are well equipped, however are very small and it would have been good to see a separate shower as opposed to a shower over the bath. The hotel boasts a swimming pool and health spa, although I did not have time to check it out during my stay. Breakfast is usually included in the room rates at this hotel and is a standard buffet breakfast type affair. The location of this hotel is another major plus point, Tower Bridge is minutes away from the hotel and many rooms offer views of the bridge and the River Thames. (Unfortunately mine didn’t!)

Apex City Of London
In my opinion, probably the best hotel in London! The Apex City Of London hotel is located only 5 minutes away from Tower Bridge; with Tower Bridge tube station providing cheap and convenient access to all areas of the city. The rooms are airy and spacious and have luxuries that you'd expected in a five star hotel; bathrobes, luxury toiletries, mineral water and a CD/DVD player are all standard in all rooms. Don't bother with the breakfast in the hotel, there is a Wetherspoon pub located round the corner from the hotel offering great value for money food and drinks. Prices can be as low as £100 per night if booked in advance which is fantastic for London!

Perhaps the most convenient hotel for Glasgow Central station, Jury's Inn offers comfortable rooms at reasonable prices. Rooms can accommodate up to 3 adults and feature an en-suite bathroom, colour TV, air conditioning, and hairdryer. The hotel is an ideal base for a shopping trip with both Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre located within walking distance. Breakfast prices at the hotel are quite expensive; a cheaper option would be one of the many Wetherspoon pubs located in the city centre. The Innfusion Restaurant offers evening meals at reasonable city prices, however a huge number of restaurants are located within very close walking distance of the hotel.

The Millenium Hotel is a four-star hotel located in Glasgow city centre. The hotel is located right next to Glasgow Queen Street station on George Square making it an ideal choice for travelers arriving in the city by train. The hotel is within walking distance of all of Glasgow's main attractions, shopping centre’s and restaurants/bars/clubs. All guest rooms at the hotel feature Satellite TV, Pay Movies, Internet Access, Climate Control, Trouser Press, Personal Safe, Hairdryer, Iron and Ironing Board and Tea and Coffee facilities. Rooms can be booked for as little as £79 per room if booked in advance on the internet. If you're looking for a cheaper option try the Jury's Inn or EuroHostel located nearby.

If you're after a cheap place to stay in Glasgow the EuroHostel may be your answer! As well as offering shared traditional dorm rooms (4, 8 and 12 person) the EuroHostel also offers private twin and double rooms. Rooms are fairly basic, however offer everything you need including a comfy bed and a bathroom. A cheap breakfast is available if pre-booked. The EuroHostel also offers 15% discount if you are going to a gig in Glasgow, simply mention this when booking online or by phone and show your gig ticket at check-in to qualify. Prices start at only £12.95 in a shared 12 person dorm.

As with all Travelodges, this hotel can be booked from as little as £19 a night which is a real bargain for a city centre hotel. The hotel is located very close to Sauchiehall Street and within reasonable walking distance of Queen Street and Central Station. Rooms can accommodate three adults or two adults and two children aged under 16. Meals are available at the hotel at the on-site bar and restaurant, although there are plenty of restaurants and pubs located nearby on Sauchiehall Street and Bath Street. Downsides to this hotel are that it can be very noisy at the weekend, especially around the time that pubs and clubs close. With rates as low as £19 it’s cheaper to stay over at this hotel rather get a taxi home.

The Travelodge Dumbarton is located on the east side of the town on the A82 road. The hotel is typical of all Travelodge’s offering budget rooms at prices starting from £19 if booked 21 days in advance. Rooms can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children (aged 16 or under). Next door to the Travelodge is a Little Chef restaurant offering breakfasts, lunch and dinner. A cheaper choice however would be the The Stonefield Pub & Carvery which is directly opposite the Travelodge offering and all day carvery for £3.50. An Esso petrol station is also situated right next to the Travelodge which has a small shop. Downsides of this Travelodge are that it is located right between a busy dual carriageway and a railway line so expect some noise day and night.

Fort William Railway Station is located on the West Highland Line with services to Glasgow Queen Street, Mallaig and London Euston. There are generally 3 services a day to Glasgow Queen Street Monday-Saturday with 1 service on a Sunday. There are 4 services a day to Mallaig Monday-Saturday, with 2 services on a Sunday. During summer months the Jacobite Steam train operates an additional daily return service to Mallaig; First Scotrail tickets are not valid on this service. The Caledonian Sleeper service to London Euston via Edinburgh departs six evenings a week (excluding Saturday). This service can be used by seated passengers as far as Edinburgh Waverly for no additional cost on the standard ticket price.

Craigendoran Railway Station
Craigendoran Railway Station is an unstaffed station on North Glasgow electric Line. Services calling at this station operate westbound to Helensburgh Central, and Eastbound to Airdrie and Drumgelloch via Glasgow Queen Street. There is a half-hourly frequency in each direction Monday-Sunday with additional trains to cater for the morning and evening peaks. There is a small unlined parking area south of the station with approximately twenty spaces; there are however no dedicated disabled spaces. Facilities at this station include a waiting shelter, cycle loops and a customer help point. As the station is unstaffed, tickets can be purchased onboard the train from the ticket examiner.
