The Goosedale Banqueting Suite
This is the party venue you didn't know existed! Hidden away in Bestwood Country Park/Papplewick, it's unlikely you'd come upon it by chance.

The venue is very upmarket and caters for special events. We had our company christmas party there last year and also a function during the summer with fireworks and dodgem cars.

The entrance hall is smart and stylish. To the right is a small, modern and chic bar, to the left the function room. The room itself is set out as a marquee with led lights in the ceiling and dressed tables.

It's all very impressive, and there's even a dancefloor for the after dinner dancing.

The food isn't brilliant, but then it rarely is when large numbers are being catered for. The choices are limited (usually only three options per course, one of which is vegetarian) and fairly standard. However it is served professionally and is adequate.

One major drawback - transport could be a problem, you do have to either drive or book taxis as there are no local transport links.

On the whole though, this is an excellent venue for a large company function. We keep going back!

Saturday nights at Rock City
If you like your Rock then you're in the right place. A good rock club should meet certain criteria - dingy (check), sticky floor (check, although they keep trying to clean it), grimy loos (check), ageing djs (check), cheap booze (check), way too much dry ice (check), excellent music (check). Rock clubs are supposed to be this way and we'd be dissappointed if they weren't!

On Saturday nights the Rig blasts out the classics at Reloaded, while upstairs they play more modern stuff in Distortion. My perception of the big upstairs room is that it is full of young skater types in baggy jeans, but maybe that's just because I tend to stay in the Rig where Air Guitar rules on the dancefloor. There's a real mix of people in this room - ageing rockers, students and everyone in between.

There's a metal room too (Nailed). I've not ventured in so can't really comment.

Easily the best Rock venue in the vicinity.

Keans Head - a little gem
A smoke free pub long before smoking was banned, this little gem of a pub is hidden away in the back streets of the lace market.

It serves a good selection of real ales, including Kriek on draft. There also seems to be a fair selection of foreign bottled beers.

The menu is peculiar and fussy eaters need not bother, but if you fancy something a bit different and don't mind paying a bit extra then it's worth a try. The desserts are good, full stop!

Lovely atmosphere and I've never had trouble getting a seat despite it being the teeniest pub I've ever been in!

The Ernhale - Arnold Wetherspoons
A Wetherspoons pub is pretty much a Wetherspoons pub no matter where it happens to be. This one happens to be in Arnold.

The decor is a bit of a mishmash, some tatty old sofas, the usual wooden tables and chairs plus a couple of trendy looking modern sofas and low tables for chilling out.

The usual policy of no music applies, although they usually have the big screen on showing some sporting event or other. The sound however, is off. This makes the Ernhale a very useful place to go if you actually want to have a conversation over your pint. It also means that diverse groups can enjoy it as no one will be hating the music.

The food is pretty standard but decently priced. I've had to send food back due to it being cold, on another occasion the meal didn't come with the side dishes it was supposed to, but on other occasions it has been top notch and served really swiftly.

As pubs go, it's OK. Not where you'd go for a big night out, but perfect for a quiet lunch or evening meal, although don't go too late or you won't find a seat. It is very popular!

The Hutt - Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire
The Hutt in Ravenshead is located directly opposite the A60 entrance to Newstead Abbey.

Recently refurbished, although not looking a great deal different to how it did before, it is a sizeable yet charming place to dine. The menu is a little limited, and the specials board was rather sparse on the day we visited, but even the picky eaters were able to find something to eat. The service was friendy and efficient and the food was good, if a little overpriced.

In summer you can sit in the beer garden and relax by the water feature. In winter they light the fires for a cosy feel.

On the whole, it's a nice place to go once in a while, but overly pricey for regular dining.
