The Bobbin is a classic student pub with good deals on food and cheap drinks especially once the yellow discount card is used. There is almost always plenty of people inside as student are known for drinking and for not being in lectures or the library, though you’ll notice it tends to be a sport team dominated place, so look out for plenty of jocks! Other than that it can be a great place to be if there is a big match on and a sure place to meet someone you know if your currently at Aberdeen Uni. The Staff are normally pretty good. Only thing is it can sometimes be difficult to find a free table.

Tapas for a Tenner!
La Tasca is a big tapas restaurant in the centre of Aberdeen, whilst it is a chain is still serves some good quality food. The lighting in the restaurant gives it a somewhat bizarre light, and as with many chain restaurants the place can seem a little under staffed. The best bet for value for money is a Mon-Thurs deal called Tapas for a Tenner which give you a good menu selection of tapas to pick and choose from as many times as you like until your full which is perfect for tapas food which by its very nature make the servings small. Outside of this deal tapas can become expensive as each small dish runs from about £3-4.

Best of a Bad Bunch
Unfortunately Aberdeen beach is lacking in some genuinely good eateries down at the beach. You are stuck with four main options of which Frankie and Bennies is one. Of course being that the beach is the number one destination for families and movie goers all these restaurants are normally full to overflowing every Friday and weekend, so first tip is to book earlier in the day if you want a table at a time that works for you. Frankie and Bennys is your average American import restaurant where you can expect diner-like food, though to their credit better than the offerings of competitor TGI Fridays. Service is often poor due to understaffing in busy periods and endless birthday parties. He worse part of an American import like Frankie and Bennys is that whilst Brits enjoy the cultural experience from America of good service and fattening foods, the service with a completely ingenuine smile and consequent expectation of tips is something that really rubs against the british cultural grain.

Overpriced but nice enough
I forst went a Neros a few years back in Northern Ireland and was delighted to see that it had made it over to Aberdeen, though to my dismay I discovered that it has turned into somewhat of a starbuck/costa wannabe. Surely we don’t need another of these places, the coffee is good, but not quite starbucks and the food, smoothies and just about anything else you might want to order will cost you a small fortune. Nero’s is seriously overpriced, but as with all these en-vogue coffee establishment, the standard of food, coffee and service is generally high. One plus to this Nero’s is that there is a designated childs play area which is great for parents who want to amuse their kids whilst indulging in conversation with friends.

This Starbucks is certainly the worst of the 4 now in Aberdeen, although the coffee and service is as good as you would expect from any starbucks the very nature of the space they have attempted to squeeze it into is what makes it so bad. The queue is always out of the door due to the tiny size of its entry level, followed by the waiting area at the coffee bar which feels like a rugby match after only 4 people are waiting. If you are lucky enough to grab a table out front and weather is nice it is a superb place to people watch and see the human traffic getting about, other than that you are relegated to the underbelly of this particular chain, in a windowless seating area with tiny toilets and messy tables.

Delivery Pizza in Aberdeen is very popular due to having 2 big Universities in the city but unfortunately the amount of business available and the undiscerning nature of their primary customers has made Heavenly Pizza’s a little sloppy. Although the pizza was delivered within half an hour, inroder to make that delivery time I suspect they may have rushed the cooking. We ordered a huge pizza for just under £20 and it was undercooked and tasteless. I wish we had bought a few frozen pizza’s instead. Apparently there have been people luckier than us with Heavenly Pizza but after that experience we wont be returning quickly!

Poldino’s has been around for a while and in some ways is easy to miss stuck away off little Belmont street. One problem for this restaurant before you get to it is the parking, though that is easily overcome if you are in central Aberdeen anyway, but if you are travelling just to eat you are forced to park in local multi storeys. The Restaurant itself whilst looking a little dated is redeemed by the good food and service. It excels in the main courses of pasta’s where the pizza and starters are surpassed by other local Italian restaurants. Poldino’s is also known to push a few bad meals out of its kitchen doors but in general it is dependable enough in its quality and has a nice atmosphere as it fills up in the evening. One tip, don’t get seated at the table at the back of the restaurant right next to the kitchen doors, it is a high speed express way!

I had passed this place quite a few times on Union Street before deciding to try it out with a few friends. The Restaurant is very well advertised and is famous for the guy who stands in front of it with a turban and traditional Indian dress, which is enough to turn a few head down Aberdeen Union Street. The restaurant has a reputation for winning quite a few awards but that in some ways can be easily dismissed as there can seem to be as many Indian restaurant awards as there are restaurants themselves! But Cinnamon clearly is an Indian Restaurant with a difference, and it has been thought through, which has been its success. The Service is excellent, and the food is delicious, the restaurant space is quite narrow and long which leaves it feeling a little cavernous but altogether it is a great restaurant for those who enjoy good Indian food.

Howies is an excellent choice for a meal that will definitely be good. As another reviewer said ‘dependable’ and although Howies changes their menu monthly (a nice addition if you are a frequent diner) you can be sure that what is served is good quality. The service is always excellent and their wine list has a good selection. I would also second that going in and getting the pre-7.30 dinner deal is a great way to taste some great food at cheaper prices. A final tip is ask for a table in the main section of the restaurant as there is a small area at the front of the restaurant with a few tables which feels a little disconnected and feels like a bit of a corridor as everyone is accessing the restaurant through it.

Excellent Italian Food
Pavarotti’s is a great place for an expensive Italian meal for a anniversary or other special occasion, the staff are very friendly and the atmosphere in the restaurant is very pleasant. Their wine list is excellent and the food is equally so. This is high quality Italian food, so whilst you are not going to get the portions of other Italian restaurants it will certainly be top quality. They often do good pre-theatre booking deals which works well as the restaurant is placed right across from the theatre and next to the park and in the evening the place lights up in a great way.
