Great breakfast (and marvellous GTD system)
I've eaten breakfast a few times at the Vesuvious on 139 Colt Street. It offers a wholesome English breakfast (I challenge you to finish it) and a good range of Continental food. I noticed heaters outside. In the morning, a wide range of people come in. People going to work. People returning from work. People with blackberries and people in working clothes. People alone. People in groups.

They are a friendly lot. I was particularly taken with their display of wine. 13 racks of 4 = 52 weeks. And if that isn't a decent New Year's resolution, tell me what is.

JC's Place
When you are in Christchurch, on the South Island of New Zealand, make sure you find time to visit JC's in Riccarton. And to twice at least. Go for the most exquisite dim sum at lunch time (book) and for an entirely different experience in the evening. Ask for help. Let them tell you what is good and if you are a westerner make sure you tell them you want their advice.

Magnificent but hard to find. Even the locals don't know Nelson Street. It is parallel to Riccarton Road (a major road in a major suburb). Turn south toward the hills at the lights on the town/east side of Riccartion mall. It is a one block street just one block to the south of Riccarton road. The restaurant is in the middle of the street - again not so obvious from the street. Make sure you find the right place - it is not the only restaurant on the street. Plenty of parking though!

Eat well and tell the proprieter I say hi. You'll be spoiled for life.

I've been here several times. By chance, every time I have been on the run and hungry. Even if they are about to close, they will get a meal together for you. Crisply cooked would be my defintion - a clear cut sort of place - nothing sloshy or blurred. Reasonably priced grills and pasta. Delicious sweets. House wine. Reasonably priced. Old fashioned proprietor who knows his guest. Anchor point of Olney - the home of Amazing Grace - you saw it in the movie. From the Slave Trade to Fair Trade.
