Which Chinese?
There seems to be a split in Shetland's opinions on chinese food. Some prefer the Great Wall. Some prefer teh Golden Coach. No one ever says they don't have a preference. In my opinion, The Golden Coach is better because:

Since the Great Wall opened they have introduced a better menu than they had before, and it is now on a par with The Great Wall's.

The service for takeaway is much better/quicker. And if you order over a certain amount they always give free prawn crackers - unlike the Great Wall, who give prawn crackers to friends only!

The ambiance is SO much better. The Great Wall is cramped and they have packed in as many tables as they can. The Golden Coach has a more spacious feel to it (even though it is smaller), and it seems to attract a less rowdy crowd.

And the food is just as good!

Good truckers food
Ok,, it may be out of the way. It may be the least obvious place to think about going to buy food. It may even be a place you dismiss as for truckers and taxi drivers. All of these are correct, but its amazing the quality of the bacon butty you get from a shed on the edge of an industrial estate. They have lovely fresh local rolls and they don't skimp on measures (unlike other establishments in Lerwick). There is a reason that its a popular stop for the truck drivers. Well, apart from the fact that there is plenty of space to park the truck. And that its close to work. Its that the food is worth getting.

But don't expect too much in the way of healthy eating...

Best Vegan food in Shetland
Its a shame that The Booth don't do evening meals any more - although I believe they do still open for afternoon teas and such. If you do get a chance to go along, I recommend it. Their food is everything vegan food should be - flavoursome and imaginitive, with a good variety of vegetables and pulses - it is so good that you wonder why people aren't more up for vegan food any why more restaurants don't cater for vegan as standard! And the utterly unbeleivable thing about the Booth is their chocolate cake - who could have thought that a dairy-free cake could be so utterly unctious! Wonderful stuff!

Disappointing
I have been to The Lemon Tree several times, but mostly a long time ago. I had been very impressed with it - great vegetarian selections with some real imagination instead of veggie lasagne (which ok is usually good) or mushroom risotto. This last time I was really disappointed. it was like food was an afterthought, the choices were limited and not very exciting, as if the zest had gone from the place. Which may well the case since the future is uncertain. it seems odd that a place like the Lemon Tree is struggling to survive, but hopefully they will make it work and recapture some of the magic that it used to have.

Friendly service, authentic food
What a great little find - if it had not been for a friend's recommendation I would have passed this place by! The owner is obviously very passionate about his restaurant and wants to make sure that everyone leaves happy. He can seem a little overly, but that is because he really does care. The food was great, much better than I expected and we were given a sample of a new dish to try and see what we thought, free of charge - great customer relations, and also, what a way to get repeat business because I may well order that dish next time I go!

Thoroughly recommended.

The great thing about Jimmy Chungs is the range of meals you can have - okay, so there may not be as many as there is on a traditional Chinese restaurants menu, but then you aren't allowed to have a bit of everything there. The buffet style works well. You can have only starters if you want. You can have three desserts if you want. And all for one good price. The lunch prices are half that of the dinner prices, so make the most of it and go for lunner - go for lunch/dinner at 3 or so! The quality is maybe not as good as some places, but thats ok because the variety and flexibility of it makes up for it.

Best screen in town
This is the best cinema for the latest release type movies - great seats, staff are fine and they tend to show more films than Vue, and for a bit longer. The price - well, its the same wherever you go now. Cinema tickets are expensive, adn the food is silly prices. When I take the kids I buy one big popcorn and share it between the three of us, as the small isn't really all that much cheaper. Same with drinks/sweets etc - it all adds up to be silly money to see a film. Which is a shame, but if you go regularly there are ways to lessen the cost.

great for a greasy spoon!
As far as greasy spoon/trucker type cafes goes, this has to be up there. It is much improved by the smoking ban I have to say - it was a horrible experience going in when every table was filled with smokers, and sitting in was a really bad idea, unless eau de cigarette was a favourite perfume, but now you get a decent range of cafe food - rolls, chips, soup - fairly standard stuff, but at a reasonable price. It also seems much cleaner since the smoking ban came in, so sitting in is absolutely fine. Staff are occasionally grumpy, but then I'm not sure I would want their job either!

Not recommended to visit
I would seriously advise anyone thinking of taking a trip to the Voe Tavern to think again. It was sold and has since been changed into a house, and Mr and Mrs Bain may be very nice people and be very welcoming, I'm not sure what they would think of a horde of drunken revellers turning up to their house on a stag bus hoping for strippers, lots of booze and a riotous time. Having said that, when the Voe Tavern was open I have it on good authority that it was a great place to while away a few hours chatting to the barmaid with a pint in one hand. Its possibly a little off giving it only 1 star - but I really can't encourage people to visit.
