what's great about Red Veg is a) the food is good and filling b) it is only slightly more expensive than standard fast food fair and c) it's located in a prime location, in Soho. On the downside, there is not enough room in the resturant to swing a cat, let alone seat more than six customers, meaning that Red Veg is a must during 'off-peak' times (which most times are at Red Veg).

cheap and friendly service
the lyceum pub is a strange creature: involving a weird mix of theatre fiends, local drunkards and students from Kings College near-by. It remains a fairly large pub (two floors) that is bound to provide you with a cheap and tasty ale at a price that will put a smile on your face. A must for those times when it is less likely to be busy (week day evenings), a pain during those times when it is (whenever something is showing at the theatre next door).

This pub, hidden about a ten minute walk from any sign of life, is provincial gay pubbing in essence: the punters are all regulars to a man (the local 'drag act' can name you each of them as they walk in the door) while the only source of potential amusement each year is the regular source of new students who find, to their horror, that this is the nearest thing that passes for 'entertainment' in a six mile radius. Saying that, it has its charms, they are just hidden under unspoken layers of dirt: go with friends for a night out, the staff are always nice and friendly. And there is a pool table.

Maison Bertaux is one of those places you go to; even though it's over-priced, even though it's scruffed round the edges, even though you are practically sitting in your neighbour's lap: because of both the atmosphere and the attractive waiting staff.

You don't go to Bar Italia for the food or coffee (which is always 'standard' at best) you go for the ambiance; the strange mix of gay men, italians, bikers, police and whom-ever else may wander by. Grab a coffee and spend the next two hours glaring at strangers, I dare you.

trying to be trendy
Trash Palace is one of the newer gay 'alternative' venues within London, serving as the rendezvous point for a whole range of 'alternativeish' indie 20 somethings who would have perhaps otherwise gone to the park to drink over-priced stella. While usually busy on a weekend night, at other times the atmosphere can resemble that of an MFI warehouse. Too big to be friendly, too small to be epic: this place serves its purpose as a weekend 'club/pub' venue, otherwise it soon seems pointless.

a locals pub for local people
hidden away behind the theatre is the Rose and Crown: this may go some way to explain the crowd, which is usually a mix of locals and a few having a pint before heading on elsewhere. Recently redesigned inside, this is a pub that looks set to be the only long-lasting 'gay venue' in the area, as others fall by the way-side. The reasons for the R&C's longevity are simple: friendly service has established a strong relationship with a set of locals, who presumably don't return for the truly shocking state of the toilets.

retro days!
a friendly establishment in which the publican is never far away and is known by her first name to at least 83% of the regular 'trade'. The music is a usually fairly standard mix of 1980's and contemporary pop and electro, go on special days for the pub quiz and game night. Once you have been to Retro a few times you will start to recognise names, faces and people.

For a night-out with vegetarian food that is of a slightly higher quality (and price) than your standard fair, Manna is the place. In what seems to be a trendy hang out for the Primrose Hill chattering classes an eclectic range of different foods are served: all to a high quality with polite service, making for a memorable night out.

Where to go for good veggie food
As you enter this resturant what becomes most clear is the open and airy ambience it has, during the day time light floods in from the skylight situated near the rear of the resturant, making for a relaxed, open plan arrangement. Or you may be seated near the front of the resturant, which is also good for watching passers by. The food itself is mixed and varied; ranging from burgers and fries to mushroom pie. I opted for the latter and was nicely surprised to find fresh vegetables came with my very well done pastry pie. The price is middle of the range, and in no way prohibitively expensive. Well worth your time and money.
