Classic Greasy Spoon
The Sportsman is pretty much what you'd expect from a greasy spoon cafe - decent food and lots of it.

Fried breakfasts are good, roast dinners are great, home made puddings are brilliant. I especially like their shepherds pie and toad in the hole.

None of the furniture matches, and it's sometimes hard to get a table if you turn up at a busy period, but it's well worth a visit.

Great food
This is my favourite chinese takeaway in Canterbury, although I must admit I've never got round to dining in the restaurant.

The food is excellent, but not 'generic' chinese-takeaway-in-a-tin. This came as a bit of a surprise the first time I ordered from them (back in late 2000), but I've never looked back. Not the cheapest takeaway place, but not excessively expensive, and you do get plenty of food.

The only drawback is that they always seem to be busy, so delivery often takes 45 minutes unless you order early, but they do warn you of this in advance.

The staff are friendly, and often hand out free prawn crackers on collection if you're waiting for food.

A long-time favourite.
I've tried most of the Indian restaurants and takeaways in Canterbury, and the Ancient Raj is the one I go back to time and time again.

The staff are friendly and attentive, the food excellent, and the prices are good. They have a very good selection of house special dishes, including the brilliantly different 'Chicken Tamasha'.

The 15th century grade II listed restaurant itself is spacious and well lit, including the most comfortable restaurant chairs I've ever sat on. The atmosphere is great when they're busy, and nice and relaxed when they're quiet.

Their birthday celebrations are certainly memorable, and conveniently offer a takeaway and delivery service. Highly Recommended.

Can't add a great deal that the reviews haven't already said, except that the Goods Shed breakfasts are wonderful. There's a pretty good choice available - bacon, sausage, fried egg, bubble and squeak, scrambled eggs, inch-thick doorstops of toast, fried bread, mushrooms - all from the farmers market.

It's not cheap (normally 7-8 pounds for a decent feed and a mug of tea), but worth every penny.
