You'd think a simple franchise - two sizes of bread roll, six inches or a footlong, and some standard fillings laid out behind a sneeze guard that, failing all else, the customer can just point at if they want them in their roll. The server, or sandwich artist as I think Subway call them, didn't know Subway's own product range or their own terms for the items which I was using as a regular customer of Subways all over the country. I had to constantly repeat myself for the server and in the end didn't even bother asking for all I wanted as I thought I'd already overloaded the server beyond her capabilities. Behind the counter three or four people, I can't be sure they were staff, sniggered and laughed amongst themselves. My sub was edible in the end but I think it was luck and the fact that how wrong can you get it putting ingredients in a bread roll. The place is dark and dingy at the rear where the food is displayed behing the sneeze guard. The staff don't wear uniforms. The front of the shop is in a state of disrepair and a bit dingy overall. You have to walk back and forth between the tables and seated customers to get to the food service area at the rear of the shop. There is no clear gangway and it's too cramped and crowded. The worst Subway I've ever been in and I won't eat in Luton Subway ever again.

It may not be cutting edge cool, it's simply probably too long established to be considered cutting edge cool, but widely considered to be the club in Luton for twenty to thirty somethings. Very well run. Can be absolutely packed but a mature, respectable crowd in a well run venue. On the scale well past mainstream into cool.

Luton's leading mainstream venue.
Safe and middle-of-the-road... Work parties, stag and hen parties and any other groups of unimaginitive, middle-aged or old before their time people gather here. Normally busy and at Xmas and New Year's Eve so packed you can't get served at the bar. Pleasant music such as eighties pop and rock amuse the thronging crowds in their party dresses and YSL shirts with their good trousers. A lot of people seem to like it here. It's average and averagely run. You could take your older aunt or uncle here and they would like it.

Yokels & inbreds.
A hideous, new build pub. Reminds me of some cheap social club. Upto ten local yokels and inbreds will line the bar or dot themselves around the tables and drink themselves into oblivion. Last few times I was there the landlady's little dog runs around the place. There's a large screen and a pool table. It's good for maybe an hour of people watching and mocking but any longer and it starts to get a bit soul destroying.

Imagine a council estate pub in the middle of a town centre. Builders in their work clothes, middle-aged drunks and the odd couple of chavs in shell-suits and baseball caps. It's ok, if you don't know anyone you might feel out of place and you shouldn't go there if you're the slightest bit metrosexual but if there's no obvious reason for anyone to pick on you you'll be ok for a couple of drinks while you wait for a bus out of Dunstable. People sort out other people with cheap coke and pills so best keep out of other people's business.

A joke.
Full of thirteen year olds... Sub-standard DJs play bad music in this out-dated nothing in the middle of deserted Dunstable. Over-strict, violent, dim-witted bouncers continually run around the place jumping drink incapacitated youngsters and chucking them out of fire exits. Five girls will be stumbling around the dancefloor, unused to wearing high heels, in some terrible, youngster's approximation of dancing. The police hang around the entrance all night as Dunstable is now so dead and deserted there aren't any people anywhere else to police anymore. Really not worth anything.

Dangerous.
A violent, dangerous place... There's always an angry wannabe gangsta demanding better pieces of chicken just to be awkward. There's nothing wrong with the chicken, it's fine. The angry wannabe gangstas are the problem. Yes I know people will front it out and claim it's not that bad and try and look hard, why pretend? An ok KFC in a bad area with terrible customers, I don't go there.

My god I found the food revolting, not in a badly cooked sort of way just not to my taste. Indian tapas? Revolting. No one, not me or anyone in the large birthday group I was in found anything they liked in the dishes ordered. Absolutely disgusting, horrid... We left quickly and went down a pub. Hideous.
