Friendly Fiery Vegetarian Indian Fare
Large glass windows turn this two storey family run restaurant into a steamy greenhouse in summer and a warm haven from the cold in winter. A splendid range of Gujarati specialties, many vegan, and special mixed platters which the kitchen will willingly adjust to avoid any ingredients (paneer) you may want to avoid. Quity spicy, but they'll do mild dishes on request for the kids. The upstairs tables are very atmospheric, with artfully arranged fabrics lending a feel of luxury and ambience to the place. Great fun for friends out or for that special meal. Bring your own bottle.

Basement Bistro
Atmospherically housed in the basement of the former Baptist Chapel half way up a hill, Laughing Gravy offer a set menu of four starters, four entrees and four desserts - and of those you will usually think two are very good, one you can take or leave and one not quite your cup of tea. One of the two partners who started it has since left, taking some of his excellent specialties with him, so the hit versus miss rate has gone down somewhat, but it remains very good value and a pleasant spot for a spot of vegetarian savoir faire. Gastro beers and a fair winelist round off the well balanced menu.

A Classic
A splendid old cinema with original interior, newish seats but still the same ornate fixtures and cafe tables at the back of the house where you can drink your mug of cocoa. A mix of first run blockbusters and the most obscure artsy features coming through town for just one night, the Hebden Picture House is genuinely a film-lover's venue. Staff are friendly and very solicitous of the customers' enjoyment - arrive late for the program and they won't let you in until the previews are over! Cheaper than major city cinemas and offering a range of concessions, its worth going out of your way to see a film in comfort and with a mug of something made by hand, not by machine.

Beautiful Space
I visited with my three children to take them to the current Charlie and Lola exhibition and was very pleasantly impressed with the building in general - very airy, very easy to navigate with a stroller! - the cafe facilities, the use of the space and the variety of work on offer. While I only had a chance to glance at what was not of interest to the under 5 set, it seemed ambitious and contemporary without being hopelessly trendy. I would go again, without hesitation and would be happy to know my Arts Council taxes were being spent there wisely! Free entry, suggested donation.

Beer on the Beach
One of the few places on Tel Aviv beach where you can find live music, beer and a friendly atmosphere. Walk in any time of the day or night and you'll get change and a bite to eat. Walk in at night and you'll get a decent earful of blues as well as a better selection of beers than most Israeli bars. Unpretentious and convenient. If you're taking a moonlight stroll on the beach, there's no pleasanter place within five minutes to stop for a drink or a pack of cigarettes.

A friendly but elegant, stripped pine and open plan kitchen restaurant for that special meal for two in the cosy back room or for a group of friends with or without kids in the front room. Bring your own bottle, though they'll keep one behind the counter for you if you're a regular. Vegan options always available. A tasty blend of Middle Eastern and South American dishes. Good value mixed platter of starters and desserts always on offer. A very tasty meal for two can be had for £40. Never empty but never crowded either. One of the owners is always at the hob to answer a question and the other is bringing you your food and a smile.
