Tiger Tiger has a wide ranging group of punters, from the people who’ll stay there all night to those that use it as a meeting point & move on to other nearby bars & clubs.

So it is what you make of it, I find the door & bar staff to be friendly & helpful, though the bar can get very busy later on.

It has a reputation for more mature patrons but I meet late teens & early twenties in there all the time. Though I only pop in there on Friday & Saturday nights.

Cool, trendy & hungry
Yes it’s cool, yes it’s trendy and yes, on a Saturday night it’s so packed & loud you will be shouting into your friends ear... so meeting a ‘new’ friend here is virtually (though not completely) impossible.

Yet another bar in Leeds that’s great for going to with a group of your friends & staying in your ‘click’. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s a great way to bond with your mates.

The doorstaff are courteous & proffessional, but don’t even bother with the food... & the service is terrible. I’ve tried it twice, never again.

On a Saturday night I’ll stay as long as the music is good... which, fair play, it usually is!

As you would expect, the comedy is top notch, on a Saturday night the comedians you see here, you may well have seen on your telly. The staff have always been friendly & helpful, but woe betide you if you persistently heckle... not the done thing in ‘chain’ comedy emporiums.

After the comics the place makes a surreal change into a very cheesy club (the word disco sums it up)... though I’ve never stayed much into this transformation... I go to ‘a club’ when I want to be in a club. Similarly if you want a good meal, do it before or after the comedy... the food is on a par with those late night burger vans you’ll see shining like a greasy beacon to all the stumbling drunks fighting for a taxi.

You wouldn’t expect your fave DJ or chef to be able to do a standup routine. Stick to what you do best.

If you want to have a conversation with your friends on a Saturday night... don’t bother with Jakes!

The music is so freekin’ loud, but it is good music, indie & rock. It’s a dark, shoulder to shoulder drink n dance with your mates kinda place... and all the better for it. You’d better be of a friendly disposition ‘cos you’ll be bumped & jostled all night long.

Best off getting in early if you’re a group of guys as when the queue forms later on, you won’t get in at all.

Three in one...
Trio refers to the three floors, basement bar, first floor restaurant & top floor bar. My fave one when with a large group is the basement bar, good indie tunes to cheesy dance & the inevitable 80’s revival... well it is predominantly students, not grubby ones, fairly affluent ones, it is Headingley after all. Unfortunately, underneath it all, they’re still students & if that irks you at all, give this & most of Headingley a wide bearth! Does get packed when the college & uni kids are in town.

The food on the 1st floor is good (though I usually only get one of the excellent pizzas when I eat here). Service is fast, friendly & efficient, there’s usually an energetic buzz about the place. The doorstaff are usually friendly & helpful, never seen any trouble here, though youngsters can get boisterous from time to time. A good place to eat during the day, though getting drunk on one of the other floors is usually the reason to be there on a Saturday night.

Top floor more indie & 80’s music, bit more relaxed here. I suspect some of the kids are unaware why the place is called Trio & that this floor even exists ;-)

Join the revolution
First off, be aware that there are TWO Revolution bars in Leeds. The older one is near the Corn Exchange, the newer one is near Millennium Square... opposite ends of Leeds, so be sure if you’re meeting friends in ‘Revolution’, you know which one!

I have asked many (MANY!) people for their opinions on which Revolution they prefer... and even between friends opinion is divided.

The newer one is bigger, two levels, comfy booths & a very pleasant atrium bit that feels like your outside (but you’re not so don’t spark up a cigarette here!). I have to say they play more commercial music and has the ‘feel’ of a club chain. Here the door staff are very professional & friendly... the barmen are not always able to keep track of who should be served next (& I have never seen one of them smile). But fair do’s... it gets shoulder to shoulder packed in here.

The older one has a more eclectic vibe, it’s smaller, tiny dance floor, doormen are professional & friendly, the bar staff are a bit more on the ball here (& seem to actually have a sense of humour!) one of them handed me one of those squirty dispenser things to pour my own drink so he could serve someone else at the same time! There’s a genuinely outside bit (so you can smoke here), it’s walled & gated so private from public view with large outdoor parasols with integrated heaters for those colder Leeds nights. The music is harder & the place has a more ‘underground’ feel.

Horses for courses, try ‘em both.

Room for elbows
Not just pool... food (not the best in Leeds though - hence 4 stars), big bar with comfy seating areas, excellent DJs on Saturday nights.

Probably the best meeting point for a Saturday night wander around Leeds... but if you get too comfortable, you could end up here all night! It’s a uniquely shaped public space, a large circular bar area that stretches under a second floor that you reach via a single wide staircase. The 2nd floor has a big open circular balcony, over which you can spy on the punters below.

You may have to get someone who already knows where it is to take you there, if you haven’t been before... it’s easy to miss. You’ll probably think, ‘Where the hell are they taking me’ more than once!

Well worth a visit.

Wardrobe wonderland
On two floors, bar, restaurant & club downstairs, you can make this venue your whole night out without having to trundle all over Leeds!

The punters are a mixed bag from professionals to students to pre & post theater goers. Never any trouble, the staff are friendly & helpful... ask for a Polish Martini at the bar... it will make the barman’s day!

The music is often retro with some of the best live bands from all over the world playing music that you can actually dance to. Hopping between the club & bar upstairs for a breather (& sometimes quicker bar service as it quietens down upstairs - cheeky tip!) is a great way to ‘mini date’ that hottie you just danced with ;-)

HiFi Heaven!
This is truly one of my favourite places go go on a Saturday night!

Even if the people can be a little bit ‘clicky’, if you go with a few friends it can make your night. I’ve never seen any bother here, it’s an eclectic crowd with a love of real music.

I have laughed & joked with the doormen, putting me in a good mood, even before I got inside the place!

It’s a small venue, but never gets so shoulder to shoulder full that you can’t dance.

The food on Sundays is highly recommended too.

Saturday night disappointment...
We get to the front of the queue, my friends breeze in, I am wearing Gaultier - Firetrap - Dexter Wong... the best clubwear a young professional Asian man’s money can buy.

I was about to be one of the best dressed people in Mission... the ‘doorman’ says ‘Too casual’ & I can’t get in. I replied, ‘This is a Gaultier jacket, anything but casual.’ he looks embarrassed & stutters, ‘Erm, ah, can you stand aside please... er too casual.’

Later I ask around my Asian friends, they can’t get in either, I look through the photo albums on the Mission website... everyone is white.

It is a shame that in this day & age a high profile club like Mission has a racist door policy. Take your hard earned cash some where else guys.
