Good snooker and pool club
The good: with the membership, it's really good value for snooker and pool. The snooker tables in particular are good quality, kept well clean and cared for, and there are plenty, meaning you'll usually have a table available if you just turn up. The bar isn't expensive and serves good pub food, as you can easily spend hours here working up a hunger. If you’re the addictive type, be careful as you could be here all day. They have big screen for football matches, converting into a sports bar during big events with a good really atmosphere.

The bad: the lighting over some of the snooker tables can be dodgy occasionally.

Tanks and planes
My favourite aspect of the War Museum is being able get up close at and see tanks, planes and artillery from the two main wars, which make a very cool, worthwhile spectacle. The museum is hugely informative with interactive areas, many videos and recorded stories, printed information and areas to read, with great detail about many of the events that happened during the wars, including different accounts (German, for example).

There's more than enough for a whole day of learning and even enough for a second visit, so if you’ve only got one day, you should plan what you want to see when you enter.

Nice view, lots of temptation
The good: Brighton pier is about more than just somewhere to get a view of The Channel. You do get a nice view, but it's all about the attractions and temptations on your way along the pier. It's a trip for the kids to enjoy the rides, candy floss and colourful entertainment.

There are plenty of places for snacks, including a Chinese stall along the path which might be your best value option.

The bad: it’s expensive, even if you're not interested in attractions and candy floss and just want something to snack on. The pier structure itself seems very worn and it does make you feel a bit insecure.

Frozen food of course
The good: Iceland is the supermarket that specialises in frozen food. They have many varieties of frozen chips, chops, vegetables, all at reasonable prices. They stock non frozen foods as well, but it's the stuff with a long shelf life that you'll want to go here for. Of course they have a large range of readymade meals, with new varieties frequently stocked, many for as low as £2. They have a great range of ice cream, too.

The bad: other than frozen food, the options and quality are not great and it loses its value to go here. The staff do not smile very much and tend to rush you through.

Cheese and Onion pasty
The good: Greggs has a nice family run, home-made feel, despite being a chain. I particularly like there Cheese & Onion pasty, which you can indulge in for under £1. Their baguettes are very tasty as well, generously filled, with prawn mayonnaise being my favourite, but the chicken and sweet corn is very tasty as well. I don´t actually frequent them for daily fresh bread which is their main service, so I can´t comment, but that´s just because I don’t regularly go to any bakery daily for bread, so it’s nothing against Greggs.

The bad: there can big a long queue during the busy periods

Huge venue, good mix
The good: there are three rooms, plenty of bars in between and several areas to chill. Drinks are not expensive and you be able to get in for around £10 most weekends. Each room/dance floor is very bid and located a good walk from each other, they generally have DJs from different spectrums so you can really get a different experience from each. Went here before as student and this was the best value. The staff are decent enough and bar service is quick. I´ve had some really good nights here.

The bad: it can take more than hour waiting in the queue if you just turn up. You can get lost inside quit easily. Some nights can be up to £20 entry if you´re not a student or member

Great pre club bar
Yates’ Leicester Square is very popular as the after work venue earlier on and gradually filters out into a pre club crowd approaching midnight. The bar service is as quick as can be expected with such numbers, there are two bars and drinks are not expensive. There are plenty of seating areas to eat or relax with your drink and if you´re planning to dance later on, entry before 9pm is free. The dance floor isn´t huge but the urban music selection is usually current and there´s a good atmosphere.

Bags are free at the clock room. They also serve decent bar food at good value, but go early to avoid too much noise.

Excellent restaurant bar club
Tiger Tiger has it all, reasonable food, plenty of bars and dance floors. Entry before 10 is free, so if you go for your meal or just for the bar early on, you can have a very decent club night afterwards. The restaurant is inexpensive for central London and has a decent menu. You rarely have to queue for more than 10 minutes on the weekend and the doormen are more human than most. There are three dance floors spread across three different levels, which offer different music environments to give you all you need for a good night of dancing.

Always get in, but crowded
The good: whenever I´m in a group of guys only we tend to end up here, as the doormen will give you conversation to suss you out and let you in. It’s a friendly venue, with a decent urban music track list and a good sized main dance floor (but better music on second floor).

It´s free entry before 10pm and £10 after on weekends. There are differently themed bars and areas to get served, if you want to see a different face, and there are also plenty of seating areas away from the dance floor to catch your breath.

The bad: the main dance floor can get absolutely rammed. It takes ages to get served on the bars downstairs around the dance floor.

The Budget cinema
The good: this is the cinema if you´ve only got £10 in your pocket and you’re planning to get a snack, too (and you happen to be close by given transport costs!). There are several screens, some of which are quite decent, screening most if not all of the latest releases. There’s not usually much of a queue and it’s easy to find from the train station, along Rye Lane.

If you just want to see something because you´re nearby and bored, it will do.

The bad: the sound quality can be poor in some for some of the lesser screens. It’s not the safest area if you´re going for a late night showing.
