William Stead
When the William Stead opened in Darlington, we were happy to try out the "new" pub. The interior is very nice, but why are the restrooms upstairs? They should be downstairs and a "family only" rule should apply to the upstairs.
Among other problems, there are lots of kids in push chairs and kids running around all over and it gets a bit chaotic. You see it's "family friendly". (Too bad, I'm not.)
It usually takes ages to get served and tables are not cleared in a timely manner. Clientele who create a disturbance are ignored as the staff is apparently afraid of confrontation. We stopped going there after a gang of unruly younger people had their feet on the tables and were generally loud and annoying, and this was going on right in front of the bar and staff!
The beer is always good and the prices are great.NOT a place to go to try and have a conversation though and not a place to go if you're in a hurry!

Christopher's Amerian Grill
The main problem with Christopher's American Bar, is the fact that no one in London seems to know where it is.
We asked several people, including a taxi driver, and finally found it "by accident". No one could even tell us where Wellington Street was!
Being American, I appreciated the menu and the choices offered. We had an excellent prime rib and the side dishes were also quite tasty. The wine was excellent as was the service. The staff went out of their way to be accommodating and the only other negative was perhaps the prices, which are a bit on the high side..even for London.

Britannia Inn
One of the dwindling numbers of real ale pubs in Darlington. This traditional pub wins Camra awards and is a pleasant place to drop in and have a drink. The TV, which is normally on these days is a bit annoying, but the clientele are normally friendly as is the Landlady. This pub has many "regulars" and gets much busier in the evenings.
Afternoons are usually rather quiet which makes conversation possible. The beer is always top notch and the location makes it convenient to town centre shoppers.

Spice Garden
BEST Indian food in Darlington, and that's an endorsement by an American born person who had never had Indian food until eight years ago. We don't even bother trying anywhere else and we always celebrate birthdays and special events there.
Very friendly owner and staff and "specials" early in the evening on selected nights. The food is always excellent and the variety of the menu is impressive. Takeaways are available and the phone is normally ringing off the hook.

The Quakerhouse
Funky little pub right off the High Street in Mechanics Yard in Darlington. This pub has won Camra's "Pub of the Year" several times and is well worth a visit.
Coors have now taken over and it remains to be seen if the vast selection of beers will still be available.

They used to have all sorts of beers I had never heard of, but now seem to be going more for the traditional run of the mill beers. Shame, really but the pub is still one of my favourites. Friendly staff and good music which is not too overpowering. Clientele is mixed, but tends to be more on the mature side.

Live music is featured on certain nights also.
