Nandos is a decent chain restaurant, serving mainly chicken in a variety of ways with peri peri sauce. The chicken and veggie burgers and pittas are nice. Even the mild sauces are a little spicy. But the really hot ones are best, of course. The chips are good and Perinaise (peri peri sauce and mayo) is really yummy. The drinks have free refills once you have bought one. The frozen yoghurt and chocolate puddings are really good too. Has an upstairs and downstairs and plenty of tables. You take your order up to the counter and pay. Service and food is quick.

Now possibly named Harpers, though it seems to constantly switch backwards and forwards name-wise between Harpers and The Drink, this club is probably one of the better ones in Guildford. Which isn’t really saying much. Monday nights are usually quite good. It is free entry before 10pm. It briefly switched to before 9pm which was an awful idea. Some nights is completely dead though and curtained off. But if it is busy, it has some decent music and Dj-ing and there are poles up for ambitious girls, and sometimes professional dancers, to dance around. Generally full of girls and boys wearing Jack Wills and trying too hard. Ah Guildford.

This shop is quite nice. It sells hot food. Even if pasties and pastries are not your thing, I prefer the pizza bread which is hot and melty and delicious. Cheese, ham and pineapple and mixed vegetable are the best ones. Plus they’re only 2 pounds 10 which is quite cheap for a lunch and really filling. They have a range of pasties – not just meat and savoury ones, but also apple and sweet filled ones which sound quite interesting. The shop does have seating but it is really small and cramped so it is an eat out type place.

Kendrews sells hot food from a counter at the back. It also sells chewing gum, magazines, a whole range of food and drinks. It is a bit more than a stationers and you can buy soup and canned food and a whole range of lunch foods. It has two sales points so there is usually not too much of a queue. It is conveniently located on the top of the high street, between two schools. There is a slight price hike on, say, the price of buying it from Sainsburys down the road, but it does sell a nice range and it is really convenient.

Odeon is the only cinema in Guildford, so it is not like you have a lot of choice. It has lots of screens, generally shows what is up and coming. It has some nice children and senior events, which is probably good and does reduced ticket prices. The popcorn and drinks and so on are so so overpriced. The Ben and Jerrys ice cream counter is quite a nice touch. The sweets are also ridiculously overpriced. The Ice Blast drink is nice. They took away the water fountain though, so no free tap water, irritating. They have student discount on tickets.

Flares is ultimately extremely cheesy, but it does not pretend not to be. It offers a range of props, like fluffy halos and horns – I think you have to buy them but we ended up being given loads of them. And it generally plays 60s and 70s cheese which is not really my kind of thing. The dance floor here is small but adequate. Was quite colourful and fun. Did not really pay any attention to the drinks or their prices. Only been in once and it was a fun night but that might have been because it was a freshers’ event in there.

Millies Cookies has slowly become worse and worse over the years. I swear the cookies have shrunk in size, if not halved, while the price has gone up and up. The white chocolate ones especially are often sickly sweet and undercooked. Millies Cookies used to put out a little basket of broken or undercooked or overcooked cookies as tasters, but I have never seen it out recently (ie last few years). So expensive really though if you buy in bulk for a treat for a group that’s quite nice and better value. Milkshakes and muffins look good but are apparently calorie loaded (not really a surprise, but still, there are limits.)

Really tasty and delicious sandwiches, made before your eyes by the nice staff.They have delicious bread, thick or thin sliced, white or brown, and fresh and you can put on salt and pepper and choose your fillings. There is a huge range of fillings and options. The sandwiches are huge as well. The old particular favourites were chicken, bacon and avocado, smoked salmon and cream cheese, and chicken and sweetcorn. Also they serve tasty brownies and chocolate slices, and some drinks and crisps and so on. Favourite with businessmen and schoolkids, busy at lunchtimes. I suppose it is quite expensive for a sandwich, but so so good.

Amazing when it was open
Completely loved this place. Really delicious Chinese and Asian food and a lovely atmosphere. It has now been replaced with some typical Italian restaurant, when there’s at least four already in Guildford. But we used to go here all the time for a nice and reasonably priced evening meal. Even lunches sometimes. One of the best options was a bento box where you could get four mini portions of different main meals into one box. You always got given prawn crackers. And fortune cookies at the end too. I miss this place a lot and wish it had never shut down, ugh.

Quite a healthy option for the top of the Friary, sandwiched as it is between McDonalds and pizza places and fried chicken. Though there’s a Subway up there now too. It does a range of jacket potatoes with toppings – tuna and mayo, beans, cheese, chilli etc. Filling and fairly tasty, and the portions are huge. One of the good things is that it serves Apple Tango too, which is hard to find. It is a decent lunch for under a fiver. The seating at the top of the Friary is plentiful if not particularly pleasant but there’s usually somewhere free to sit. You get sporks to eat it with as well.
