Good ambience, very tasty food
Pepito's is located outside of the main Derby drinking area, near to the train station. Pepito's is a small independent restaurant offering Mexican fare. Every meal is well presented and my meal of burritoes with refried beans was excellent. There are mainly couples eating at this restaurant with the odd group. The decor is bright and modern with light music in the evenings. Waiters offer a good description of the meals and service was swift. We didn't have a dessert as we were so full but coffee's afterwards were good value. The overall bill was also good value, making Pepito's the best Mexican I have been to in the area.

Lively and fun
Antibos restaurant is a large establishment just down the road from Derby's main railway station. Although this restaurant is not in the main drinking area, it isn't far away by taxi. Antibo's is very large with a bar set off to the left hand side. We found the drinks to be quite expensive but this is often the case with restaurants. The waiters were fun and relaxed and frequent birthday cakes and songs came from them. Pizza's and Calzone's were large and well cooked. Pasta dishes seemed to be less spectacular. Starters were over priced for what was on offer. Garlic breads were better value. Overall, an excellent choice.

Run of the mill fare
This branch of Jee Ja Jees is situation on a housing estate near Derby. Strange location given its popularity. Je Ja Jees has a fairly dark decor at this branch with lighted candles provided on each table. Je Ja Jees is popular with groups and couples alike, so it would be wise to book on weekends. We found the food to be very good, vegetable rogan josh, chicken tikka masala with naans were well spiced and well cooked. We also sampled the usual cobra beer and were suprised to find the meal to be so reasonably priced. The restaurant also offers takeaway menus but many choose to collect directly from the branch itself.

Fantastic fare
This branch of Anoki used to be Mumbai Blue and is located on the A38 going out of Derby towards Burton-on-Trent. It is very difficult to pull off the main road at this restaurant so please be very careful.

The ambience at this restaurant is top class, many mercendes and jag's parked outside in the car park. Anoki has made this a real destination restaurant in the area. We found the tasting menu to be excellent value - popadoms and then a massive collection of indian dishes to share with naans. They also allowed us to take home a doggy bag as there was so much left over

A bit dodgy
Big Blue Coffee company is located on Sadler Gate, previously a main shopping street in Derby, although overtaken by a shopping centre up the road. Inside, the staff prepared drinks to a reasonable standard, but I did have doubts about the standard of hygiene-which in a place which sells food and drink, should be excellent. Inside the toilets was graffiti and parts of the place looked like they needed a thorough cleaning. Leather sofa's at the back were comfy but worn through and many of the tables were wonky. There is a nice ambience, mostly students with the odd business person passing through and but for the cleanliness issues, you could easily pass an hour or two in the daytime.

Great cheap pub
Weatherspoons - also known as the Standing Order in Derby is a fantastic place to meet people and take advantage of the constant array of drinks promotions. We found that although the bar was busy, we were able to get served quickly. 1930's style booths provide a bit of ambiance, as does the high celings and decorations of a pub that used to be a large bank. Weatherspoons also offer very cheap food, from curry club to Sunday roasts, that also include a drink (either alchoholic or not) with your meal. The crowd is a massive mix of groups on night outs to regulars nursing a pint in the corner.

Good food, odd place
This Pizza Express is located in a shopping mall, not unusual some might say, but this shopping mall is all but closed at night- spooky when you are looking through dark malls for a lit up restaurant!. This Pizza Express was busy but the staff were quick and polite in bringing your food. We enjoyed the dough balls, lasagne and the best part was the toffee glory sundae ice cream!. This restaurant was full of families and young couples so would not be ideal for a romantic date for two. You need to book for this Pizza Express as we saw several people turned away due to the restaurant being full.

Kangaroo burgers
The Walkabout Inn is one of a chain of Aussie Bars across the country. This branch of Walkabout has a fairly good selection of food and beers including Kangaroo meat for the adventurous!. This pub shows sporting events especially rugby during the day time and is popular with a sport loving crowd. At night it is heaving with people and you will struggle to get to the bar. On Friday and Saturday nights, a live band plays and in my experience these have normally been outstanding. On Friday and Saturday nights it cost two pounds to get in, which to see a live act is very good value. Later in the evening, a dj takes over playing cheesy pop. The floor in Walkabout always feels like it needs a good clean though!

Best in the day
Limes bar is situated right in the centre of the main drinking area of Derby. During the evening it is massively full and heaving with the hoi polloi of Derby. The drinks are extremely pricey but I enjoyed the atmosphere and not too loud music. Due to the number of people the bouncers had let in, it was difficult to obtain a drink, let alone get it back to your seat. There is a small outside area on the top floor that was full of smokers.

During the day, you can sit outside and let the world go by with a drink on the patio, this is a far better option.

Usual excellent Hilton fare
Located some distance outside Milton Keynes town centre, the Hilton Milton Keynes is popular with conferences and short breaks. The Hilton offers a large lobby with free newspapers and excellent chairs to sink into of an evening. The hotel offers very large rooms looking out onto fairly nice countryside. The room was four star with black out blinds provided to offer a better night's sleep. The hotel can organise taxi's for you into Milton Keynes which is very useful. We also used the leisure club the next day. We found the swimming pool to be very small considering the number of guests.
