I was not sure what to expect picking somewhere to eat at random and walking in at 10pm but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the food was served very quickly but the restaurant was empty! The fact it was empty was not a concern given the time on a Monday night in February (2008). The quality of the food was excellent and the choice was good too. I have no idea what it is like when busier but I would certainly go back and be happy to recommend it to anyone. We went to TGIs in August and then again in December. The service was better the second time and the food was hotter and the steaks cooked much more like we asked for. So no complaints. Personally I quite like TGIs, maybe the food is not out of this world but you get what you ask for. If you are not sure check out the menu on their website, if you don't fancy anything, then don't go. But if you like American food, with a bit of Mexican thrown in then give it a try.

I am sure this applies to all TGI Fridays, it does to all the ones I have been to.

Reasonable Curry
A group of us visited here in December 2007 and had a good night out. Including drinks (no wine) we ate for £21 per head and there were no complaints about the food. It is not a large restaurant but if you want a nice curry, at a reasonable price in a nice place then Ambar's is worth trying. My vindaloo was not as hot as some I have had but that is a very subjective thing.

Whilst there is nothing that sets Ambar's apart from the crowd it is well worth a visit. Maybe three stars is a little harsh but I have rated other places 4 which I prefer, so on my scale it seems fair.

If you have never been to Shimla Pinks in Manchester (or anywhere else for that matter) then I would recommend giving them a try. The food is excellent, with plenty of choices including a good number of vegetarian dishes. I visited in December 2007 and there was a Christmas menu but I confess to not reading that bit!

The service was good and the food was hot (temperature) and very tasty. Shimla Pinks does not feel like your "classic" Indian restaurant it was a certain air of quality and the decor is very modern. Having said all that they did not have table cloths, but that is a minor point.

One last point was that even on a Tuesday night it was busy but there was not a long wait and drinks were served while waiting. Busyness might have been due to Christmas however.

An excellent buffet
After a funeral at the nearby crematorium a buffet was laid on at the Star Inn. I have eaten many buffets in hotels, but none as nice as this one. There was a good variety of what seems to have been home made food, the meat pie was particularly nice. I am not a cake eater but apparently they were excellent too.

The Star Inn also served food and judging by the number there I would expect all their food to be of a similarly high standard.

Away from the main road it is not necessarily easy to find but do not give up, well worth a visit.

A good and quick Chinese
I have eaten at the Little Szechuan more times than I care to remember! The basic premise is no-frills restaurant, comprehensive but short menu with quick service. The decor is basic but clean, no frills just simple. The menu has most things you want, it is not too long so some may find the range limited. The real plus is that the food is good, hot and comes quickly. I found it quicker to visit the Little Szechuan than wait in a hotel for room service! As I have been so much all I can do is recommend the Little Szechuan, they give you good Chinese food with no fuss or hanging about. The prices are reasonable, so take the family or some friends.

Excellent Italian Food
We visited Felicini in October 2007 and found it to be excellent. The choice on the menu was good, with the usual array of Pizza and Pasta. The prices were average and the food very good. The waiter recommended the Hoi-Sin Duck pizza and I can confirm it is very nice. The deserts were good and big enough to share, or not!

The restaurant had a modern, contemporary feel and even had a bit of river running under glass in front of the bar, unusual touch. Well, not real river a bit of waterway originally for the mill I guess. The River Wye is very close and you can I think sit outside.
