Bit Of An Italian Feel
Brooklyn Cafe has been a feature in Shawlands for decades, there are some old photographs showing the Brooklyn in byegone years. My only complaint is the coffee is super heated, beware. The cafe has undergone a transformation in recent years and the decor is mostly wood (I think pine). Seating upstairs is a little too close together. The toilets are upstairs as well, I think there is disabled toilets downstairs. You can sit-in or there is a take-away section which is extremely popular with the school children from Shawlands Academy. So lunchtimes can be manic. The menu has an Italian feel with pizza and pastas available, as well as breakfasts. Price wise it is quite good, there are sometimes specials on. Staff are friendly and a couple have what sounds like Italian accents.

The Parched Poet is handily located for a drink or meal before going to the cinema, especially if you are the type who detests Burger King/McDonalds etc Have been on a number of occassions and each time my meal has been fine, however I cannot count the number of times when other customers have returned their meals. So, I think the food can be a bit hit or miss. Meals are not cheap, Weatherspoons are cheaper. I would say the menus and quality between the two are about the same. Family friendly pub with a childrens menu, children have be out by a certain time (7.00pm I think). Staff are okay, cannot say they are unfriendly but I have never left a tip as I do not feel they deserve any. I do normally leave tips. The only thing going for the Parched Poet is the location, it has no other redeeming feature.

Last time I stayed here was within the last year. During my stay some of the rooms were undergoing refurbishment, this did not diminish my stay. Was able to book online, which is always helpful. The hotel was busy but you do not get disturbed by other guests, very thick walls. The breakfasts are extremely well cooked, cooked to order. Porridge was delicious. Breakfast room felt a bit tight, it is located in the basement. A helpful night porter is available, as are all of the staff. Rooms are large, the usual large rooms found in Victorian buildings. All rooms are ensuite. Very clean. Beds are comfy but not so soft you sink into them. Recommended for those visiting the West-End and City Centre.

Lunch Time Must
The real draw back to Greggs is the terrible advert featuring the "comic" out of Max & Paddy. Greggs are on just about every street and everyone of them is busy. Sells take-away sandwiches, cakes, bread/rolls, and pies etc. Plus hot/cold drinks. Staff are okay but you do get the odd one who needs to learn how to smile. Personal favourites include the Harvester loaf, sells for approximately 87p. The Harvester bread is used for the Chicken & Mango sandwiches, which are a bit steep at £1.89 but very tasty. I find the cakes in Greggs are overly sweet, almost sugary. Whilst the cookies taste undercooked and soggy. However, I must be in the minority as Greggs sell thousands of cakes every hour.

I think this is the first Chinese restaurant to have buffets, normally the realm of Indian restaurants. The problem with buffets is you eat too much, and definately in the China Buffet King. This place is absolutely chokka during the peak lunch hour. It teams with shoppers, students, and the local office workers. I found you have a bit of a wait for drinks. The queues for the buffet can get a bit hectic, with people going in different directions. Although this means that the food is always hot, it does not lie long enough to cool down. Staff are a wee bit offish. Excellent prices. Varied buffet menu.

Well what can you say that all choccie fans do not already know. This place is a chocolate lovers paradise. Part of the Thorntons chain. Currently selling four small bars of chocolate for £2. You all have to try the Scillian Lemon and the Cappuccino. Christmas is not Christmas without at least one box of Continental Selection. As with all Thorntons you can personalise cartain purchases and gift wrapping is available. Always very pleasant staff. The only draw back to Thorntons is the queues that can form during those special times of the year - Christmas, Easter etc. This review can really apply to any Thorntons within the UK as I have yet to have an unhappy experience in one.

Getting better for shopping
Sainbury's is located at the far end of the Braehead Shooping Centre (opposite end from M&S). Over the past few years Sainbury's have finally got their act together and you no longer go in and find constantly empty shelves. This problem was throughout the Sainsbury's group, not just this store. Have to admit I use this store to stock up on buy one get one free offers. The quality of their produce is superior to Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda. I would it is no par with M&S but without the M&S prices. Excellent parking facilities. It also has the Coinstar facility. There is one gripe with this store and that is the restaurant. Over the years it is common to have a bite to eat before shopping. I have noticed the service and quality of food served has deteriorated - it is still way ahead of the yeuch served in Asda.

Handy
The Old Smiddy is the pub for a drink after an Autumnal/Winter stomp in Linn Park. You can get to Old Castle Road via the bridge from Linn Park. To me (during the day and early evening) it is a friendly local pub catering for all. Typical Glasgow local pub but with character. Have to admit I've never been during late evening/night-time. Clean and tidy toilets, well for the ladies anyway, not sure about the gents. Hubby says they are okay. Very reasonably priced drinks, have never eaten here so cannot make comment. To be honest the rating is between a 3 and 4 star

Highly Recommended
First time I ate at this restaurant was on it's opening night. A good number of years has passed since then and I have been fortunate to enjoy a good number of equally memorable meals there. My work had received an invite and I was the very lucky individual chosen to represent my work. The food is sublime. Have to admit was never a great Italian food fan before eating here, this place sets a very high standard and changed my opinion completely of Italian food. One draw back is lack of parking, it is slap bang next to the Victoria Infirmary. It is situated on an island surrounded by double yellow lines. Although the bus stops are very handy - just outside the door! Battlefield Rest was originally a rest stop for the bus drivers. Only piece of advice I can give come and give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Dress nicely for the occassion and come by bus - no's 44, 5, and 66.

Best join a Slimming Club
There is a reason I have a weight problem and it is all down to this restaurant. I now travel from Kilmarnock to get here as I have yet to find it's equal. After working your way through the buffet you roll out of this restaurant. Staff are very friendly, my hubby managed to get a freebie Kingfisher pint glass. He loves the Indian lagers available. I can't say the decor is to my taste but I go for the food not the wallpaper. Parking is a bit of an issue, especially as most of the property around there is tenement flats. However a small walk to and from the New Anand only helps to burn a few calories off. Very relaxed atmosphere, no need to dress up. Certainly good value for money.
