Curlers
Where all the students go. Shows football/rugby matches on a big screen, so if you're not into sports avoid Curlers on match days. Student nights are on Monday, with £1 drinks. Serves food during the day & until about 8pm.

Nice atmosphere, & the fairy lights are lovely! The folk sessions on Thursday & Sunday nights are ok, but not great- they're more of a concert than informal jam session.

Beanscene
I agree with the children comment, but the Beanscene on Cresswell Lane's slightly quieter during the week! The tchai latte is amazing, as are the iced fruit boosters. Slightly pricy (well, for the student budget), but worth it. Some proper meals served as well as sanwiches - the nachos are great, but the humous plates are disappointing.

Old fashioned but cosy pub - good for a quiet drink during the week, but fills up at the weekend. Tends to be more middle-aged customers, but younger people can be found there too. It doesn't do food. There's a folk session every 3rd Thursday of the month that's worth going to.

This is a fun cafe with quite eccentric decor (phone boxes, neon lights etc). Gets very busy on Saturday afternoons. Has an outdoor courtyard area which is very nice in the sunshine. It's quite hard to find, but worth it. Avoid the sickly milkshakes though!

Nice little tea room tucked away down a side street. Usually got a lot of elderly people, but it's quite cheap and does nice sandwiches and cakes. The staff are always friendly.

Good Italian food at decent prices - £5-£6 for pizza. Can book parties. Open every night and every lunchtime except Sunday.
