Classic Cantonese Restaurant
Chung Ying Garden is one of the biggest Chinese restaurants in Birmingham.

They do superb dim sum for lunch. Very wide range of choice and pretty affordable. We pay usually about £10 a head.

I have mixed experience for main dishes: some very good, some very very average. If you want to enjoy the place to full, I am afraid you have to know how to pick the dishes. My tactics are to avoid the most common Cantonese dishes that you normally see at the Chinese takeaway and go for more adventurous one. It is usually rewarded. (This advice, of course, for those who find Chinese takeaway food boring).

To me, the major set back of Chung Ying Garden is the decor: it is very dark and some parts look rather shabby. But, some friends do not agree with me, so judge it by yourself.

And, don't confuse Chung Ying Garden and Chung Ying: the latter is not as good as CY Garden and even shabbier.

Great Malaysian Food
To be exact, this is Malaysian-Thai-Singaporean-Cantonese Cafe.

This is my favourite haunt, as they serve great Malaysian food! The loyality of the Malaysian food lovers in Brum is divided between Village Cafe and Malaysian Delights just next door, and mine goes to this one. I never tried their Thai dishes, but a friend of mine come here to eat Tom Yam Ramen time and time again.

Specialised in Szechuan food
Chinese restaurant specialised in Szechuan cuisine, with sister restaurants in London and in Manchester. Recently redecorated and the decor has been upgraded. The Birmingham branch is rather small, with perhaps 15 tables or so.

I ate here twice, and on both occasions the food was decent enough and the service was very good. If you are not familiar with Szechuan cuisine, ask the waiters for help. While the other Szechan restaurants in Birmingham serve also Cantonese, and if the waiters see you at a loss, they just give you Cantonese menu, but this one does not and no way to escape!

This place is very popular for Chinese hot pot, but I have never tried it yet. It costs £18/person for unlimited amount of food (I think the minimum order is for two, but not sure).

Portugal's Colonial Food
Partly because it is out of tourist area of Lisbon, it is a typical neighbourhood jem, but it is not too far from the centre and convenient enough from Saldanha metro station for anyone who wants to try Goan cuisine. The food is totally different from more generic 'Indian' restaurants in the central Lisbon. South Indian town of Goa used to be a colony of Portugal and its culinary culture has some influence from Portuguese cuisine, as, for example, Vindalho (this is originally a Goan dish), curry cooked with red wine.

Interior is stylish and comfortable at the same time. The main dishes are around 10 euros (meat cheaper and fish dearer) and expect to pay 15-20 for 2 courses (without alcohol). The choice of wine seemed to be good, although I did not drink.

Menu was Portuguese only, but my Indian waitress spoke good English. Food and service were very good, and I will certainly call again, if I have a chance to go back to Lisbon.

Interesting choice of dishes
Posher than other Chinese places in Birmingham Chinatown: better tableware and wider choice of dishes (at least for those who manage to read Chinese menu). On down side, pricing is slightly higher and portion sizes are less generous. Specialities are Sichuan, North-Eastern, skewered bbq meat, and hot pot. It is a good place to go depending on the occasions.

A friend and I had a dinner, and with 2 bottles of beer and a pot of tea, the bill came to £40 ca. It was Saturday evening and very busy, but it should be quieter during weekdays.

Stylish restaurant with traditional food
This is my favourite Indian place in Birmingham. The Decor is modern and stylish, but the food tastes traditional Indian. It does regional specialities as well. Rather expensive, but reasonably so.

Week day 2-course lunch for £9.95
We had a 2-couse lunch here. Food was excellent and good value for what we paid. It was un-pretentious, good British. The service was friendly and quick. The manager looked genuinely interested in providing good food and in pleasing the clients.

I eat here pretty often. You can order either one plate dishes (main dish + rice) or normal a la carte dishes. Serves Malaysian-Chinese food as well as Cantonese food.

Service is friendly and quick as well.

Maybe the best value restaurant in B'ham
A friend and I had a lunch here. We had fish, meat, rice and spaghetti, all for under £10! Pretty tasty as well.
