    Mill Lane respite
Yet another reason to prolong your stay in a part of London that still boasts real people: West Hampstead's 'The Kitchen Table'. If some of the best coffee and cake in North London weren't enough, proprietors Tom and Jennie's affability and genuine charm make the cafe a hugely relaxing place to enjoy a mid-week lunch or Saturday morning fry up. Rustic wooden tables and chairs, with some communal picnic table-style seating reminds you of Le Pain Quotidien before it went the way of Starbucks. It's a shame they're not open in the evenings and Sunday when we would need them most, but I guess they have to bake their cookies and pies at home sometime. If you can stand the odd screaming toddler and avoid death by Mill Lane bus on the way there, The Kitchen Table is hard to beat. Don't miss the muesli and compote and chocolate chip cookies.
