It is definitely all about Thursday. Have seen some awesome open-mic nights here. Really inspiring stuff. No matter what mood you arrive in, you always want to shake ya ass a little by the end of the evening.

The point of this review is not to say more of the same, however, it is to tell you: TAKE CASH, they do not accept cards. Very annoying if you aren't prepared. So fill your pockets (though it's not too expensive for the fashionable area) and wear your dancing shoes.

Thursday night's are the best nights to go in my opinion, as Adam Rock has great bands down there.
For lovers of soul/latin/jazz/samba/jazzfusion it's a wicked little venue & always a friendly atmosphere...

I visited there lastnight 1st April 2007.

There was a band made up of people just jamming away, were very good and lively ...

Very much a place I would recommend, as the crowd are relaxed and easy going. The place has an easy going vibe.

It's really hidden away in the back streets of Brixton in a residential street. So you have to really find this little gem of originality.

One of the more 'real' places on Portobello Road, Mau Mau is great, especially if you hit a night with some good live music. Shouldn't be too hard, as most nights they do have something going on.
Little detail that can make a big difference. It's one of the few places I've come across in london that give you an orange slice with your golden tequila shot, instead of lemon. You have to ask for it of course, but in 90% of the places I have asked I get the usual blank stare and the 'sorry mate, we don't have oranges' response. Well why not? you have oranges in a big bowl on the bar...please slice some. Golden tequila is so much better followed by a bit of orange and the rest of the world seems to know that. Anyways, digressing here...Cool place Mau Mau and if you go, don't forget to ask for an orange with your shots of golden tequila. If enough of us keep on asking, I'm sure we can set a trend here, which we can all enjoy for years to come.

The Effra is a genuine reason to live in South London. Without giving too much away (as you really have to go here to experience it) it's a 'proper' boozer tucked away on an innocuous residential street in the smarter part of Brixton. The beauty of this place is that it is REAL! Full of interesting locals from across the social and racial spectrum - the common link for them all is they love socialising, beer and quality live music. Most nights of the week you can hear top notch jazz, reggae and more in the back room. I highly recommend the jazz on Thursdays which usually sees a crew of over 10 talented old-school musicians jam away til midnight. Its all free of charge and the beer is reasonably priced, though has crept up over the past year. The beer garden is blissful on summer evenings.

Friendly, cheap and with excellent music. A great place to go with your buddies to bob along to some tunes and meet some nice peeps.

the review title says it all, was taken here by a mate and ended up spending the whole evening here. They have live acts here sometimes and it all makes for a cool cosy atmosphere. Drink are fairly priced and the people there are chilled. Plenty of seating and overall a nice place to chill out in.
