Part of the Tas chain of Turkish restaurants, it has a varied menu, including great value set lunches, dinners and meze to share. Desserts are less exciting but I do like the baklava. Service is attentive even when busy though occassionaly we have been brought the wrong dishes! Great shop next door on one side and a lively bar on the other side.

In the deli, the bread is amazing and the three-salad plate of freshly prepared turkish foods are delicious and good value (I worked my way pretty much down the whole counter!). They also do takeaway and various interesting Turkish groceries. I have also eaten in the restaurant, which was good, but not that much better than the cheaper venues next door, and the bar. Usually simply to sit and chat over a cup of tea but I'll also take any opportunity to eat a meal there - the menu is appropriately (but not exclusively) fishy and the food is both plentiful and delicious. It has covered seating areas as well as outdoor spaces (including an excellent ice-cream parlour) and in addition to pointing out the obvious - that it makes a trip to the beach on a sunny day so much pleasanter, I'd also like to recommend that you pay it a visit on a stormy day too as it's the ideal spot for watching a spectacular sea while remaining safe, warm and well-fed.

This little taste of Italy is open 24 hours a day and is always filled with caffeine fans no matter what the hour.

Inside, its walls are lined with black & white photos of Italian sporting greats and other memorabilia. There is a large TV that televises any Italian football matches and guarantees a full house at these times.

But it is the tables lining the street that are where you want to be. Yes, people do come to Bar Italia for the great coffee and perhaps a meal, but of equal importance is its superior people watching location!

We have stopped off here a couple of times for a coffee and snack. Coffee is pretty good, though the service isn't always the greatest.....but as long a you get a table on the street then all is forgiven!

It's the kind of place I would now get up early on a precious Saturday morning to go and visit, that's how great it is.

But lunchtime is when this place really comes into its own. By 1pm every weekday, it's a steamy, buzzing place, stuffed full of an unusual cross-section of people: cabbies make up its staple trade, but they usually pop in a bit earlier along with local builders, to avoid the rush of Westminster suits, Civil Servants, and Channel Four workers.

The food here does exactly what is says on the tin. Hearty, stodgy mains courses are always plentiful, and the special changes every day. The most common orders are for eggs, beans, sausages, and their legendary chips- huge yet somehow light golden bites of fluffy goodness. The scampi and the chicken fillet burgers are some of my other favourites. Scampi salad is a real pleasure- a chunky, basic salad topped off with refreshingly unhealthy fried morsels. My only criticism is that theyâ¬"re still stuck in postwar school-dinners era as far as their peas are concerned- they use those sludgy khaki-coloured tinned processed ones.

But the most memorable thing about this place is the sheer volume at which the owner/ proprietor, Marco â¬SThe Voiceâ¬

Rating: 4.2

Location: 97-99 Isabella Street, SE1 8DA, London, United Kingdom

Phone: 020 7620 6191

Website: http://www.tasrestaurant.com

Tags: lively, good value, vegetarian, turkish, romantic
Located under a railway arch and off the main road (the cut), it is much more romantic and has a better atmosphere than the other Tas restaurant around the corner which is generally more full. If you sit outside on a sunny day, you will be surrounded by beautiful plants although it's pretty good inside aswell - it feels like you're in a nice cave. On some nights, they have a guy playing a guitar, good, authentic background music!

They have a pretty good menu here, there are a few set menus. The Ev and Deniz are good for trying some of the starters but if you share the Deniz between 2 people, that's enough to fill you up! Apart from that, they have fish, meat, veggie and pasta dishes to choose from.

I've tried Incik which was absolutely delicious the first time I had it and average the second time (don't know why!!).

I've also had Patlican soslu kuzu kapama which is grilled aubergine puree with cashar cheese topped with oven cooked lamb. It was definitely an interesting dish! The puree was smooth and rich, slightly sweet and the lamb was meltingly tender. I'm not used to the flavours but I'm glad I tried it.

The kalamar dolmasi (stuffed squid) wasn't very good. The squid was pretty rubbery and there was nothing special about the filling. I don't usually get to the dessert stage and still be hungry so I haven't tried any of the desserts here.

After dinner, you should have a drink (or two) in the bar area. The bar is a nice room, there's even a water feature! The deli next door is worth visiting aswell. They have fresh dips and stuff to take away and also a good selection of dry goods.

Better to book a table if you want to sit. Food is simply one of the best in the area, they have a mouth-watering Mediterranean menu with a wide range of sandwiches (Try Dalí, Gaudí and, of course, the Special of the Day), salads and meat dishes.

I especially recommend to try chicken or special of the day, with balsamic vinegar & mustard... deliciousss.
