A welcome reprieveIt was heartbreaking when The Palace closed it doors in 1999. The only cinema for miles around, it was the hub of teen society. Fortunately, it's recently found a new lease of life, copying the chameleon and assuming many guises: cinema (yay!), brasserie, concert hall, comedy club, conference venue, dance hall and more. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

Rip-offI got the distinct impression that, whatever high principles they may purport to subscribe to, the people that run this place are not interested in their customers' best interests.

We had to queue for ages (approx. 30 minutes), standing in their busy doorway. Luckily I had a free paper with me, which I read from cover to cover.

Once seated, in front of aforementioned queue, I was glad of the pullover I'd brought as by now a sharpish breeze was blowing through the doorway, onto my back.

I've recently had to start trying to cut gluten out of my diet - much easier said than done as you'd be surprised how often it can sneak into products that you just wouldn't expect to contain it - so I'm especially grateful to food retailers that provide clear labels telling me what's safe and what's not. Unfortunately, Giraffe don't do this. However, the Manager did go out of his way to try and help and after much rummaging around in his office (and another fairly lengthy wait) was able to produce a list of which products did/didn't contain gluten. Unfortunately, that was nearly everything.

Eventually I opted for an overpriced steak (fatty) and mash (dry). The portion size was adequate though, which is more than I can say for the duck noodles that my boyfriend opted for. The look on his face was akin to a starving kitten, closely followed by one of pain, on receipt of the bill.

Our advice: don't bother.

OutstandingI love to go here whenever I'm back in Dorset, it's a favourite with everyone in the family. Usually simply to sit and chat over a cup of tea but I'll also take any opportunity to eat a meal there - the menu is appropriately (but not exclusively) fishy and the food is both plentiful and delicious. It has covered seating areas as well as outdoor spaces (including an excellent ice-cream parlour) and in addition to pointing out the obvious - that it makes a trip to the beach on a sunny day so much pleasanter, I'd also like to recommend that you pay it a visit on a stormy day too as it's the ideal spot for watching a spectacular sea while remaining safe, warm and well-fed.

Chicken delightA great place for interesting sandwiches. The main draw is their spit roast chickens, which they sell in baguettes (half a chicken!) or with salad. Most people seem to buy take-out - the eating area is very small: cosy and relaxed during quiet times but cramped and a little stressful when busy.

Worth a visitThis used to be my local curry house and I was sorry to leave it behind when I moved away from the area but thrilled to discover that they delivered to my new address (despite having moved a good 20 minutes away and across the river). Ironically, I'd never eaten *in* the restaurant while I lived locally but they gave the place a drastic makeover a year or so ago and so I thought I'd give it a go. Great move. I now average a visit about once a month - even though it would be easier to get them to deliver. The decor is modern yet cosy, the staff are helpful and friendly, the menu is extensive and interesting and the food delicious.

A New FavouriteIt would be easy to miss this place but such a shame. They specialise in delicious Turkish cuisine with oriental influences - the menu is so full of interesting choices that it may take quite a while to choose.

Purple PassionGreat place - and I promise I'm not just biased because they've chosen to decorate in my favourite colour!

The service was a little slow on the night I visited but the food was well worth the wait - delicious, full of flavour and well presented.

English CuisineA handy local restaurant with a difference - the cuisine is English! Maybe not the most tempting prospect but the food is actually very tasty.

They also specialise in ciders and perrys (pear cider) - a refreshing change from the norm.

Hidden GemLovely, fresh food - and ethical too - served in a pretty walled garden at
the back of the Arts Centre. There's an amazing giant ammonite sculpture in
the wall. Unfortunately, it's only open on market days: Wednesday and
Saturday, 10am - 2pm.

Something for EveryoneThis restaurant is spread over several floors above a pub in the centre of town. Each floor is divided into distinct areas, each area has its own slightly different feel to it. Excellent food and a welcoming atmosphere.
