This place is a great little venue in such an upcoming and 'trendy' part of town. Overspill onto the street to people watch. But best of all before you even set sights on this eaterie as you turn down Guilford Place there's a wonderful aroma in the air, spices, garlic and tomatoes. All the best of home cooked Italian.

Best of all the menu's a sweet treat of the mostly sterotypical made just like mama dishes. Pasta and Pizza feature heavily and everything is freshly prepared and with such zeal ! I saw one waiter so charming with his service that the couple who had come only for coffee stayed for a three course luncheon, complete with a bottle of wine. If only we were all so easily swayed.

Wine here could be better. But prices are so reasonable that one can overlook this.

I'm looking forward to being in this part of the city again, so i can follow my nose and catch the real italian spices in the air again. You sidestep London's best-placed begging pitch, you wander steamy-spectacled into the last hot hurrah of the Jewish East End, you queue with the cabbies and the ravers and the Shoreditch spuffers, you ask, you get, you pay, you're out. What do you need, a manual?

At the wrong end (if there is one) of Brick Lane's neon-drenched passanda and pilau paradise, the bakery's policy remains very simple; let's make beigels better than anyone else in London, let's sell them ridiculously cheap, let's never close.

The fact that their black breads, chollas and chocolate brownies are exemplary is almost an irrelevance - everyone in their right mind comes for one of two things, smoked salmon and cream cheese, or hot salt beef and mustard. In a beigel.

On a cold winter's night, in the blank space between alcohol and a sweaty night bus, the black hole of the beigel is the event horizon to my appetite's atmospheric particle, drawing me inexorably towards it, filled with moist chewy salty hunks of brisket, oozing with the sweet hot bite of english mustard and comehereyoubeautycometopapa!

They serve a delicious Sunday roast - it's either pork or lamb on alternate weekends. That Sunday it was pork's turn and it was so good we practically breathed it down with a few pints. There is a tiny veranda overlooking the Thames where it is incredibly relaxing to sit with a few mates and a few more pints on a sunny day. All the action is overseen by who I'm guessing is the resident mascot, Max, a German Shepherd inclined to mind his own business while happily doing the rounds in the place.
