Phone: 0161 200 1500
The Cornerhouse - quite pricey, ever-so-slightly pretentious but absolutely mint. The cinema always has the best films on, the bar has some great cocktails and beers and the shop has the coolest books, greeting cards and magazines. The Monday night quiz is great too ⬠pretty tricky but not too difficult.

The staff are superb. They must get paid well as they're always super friendly, efficient and look like they're having a good time. Go in happy hour in youâ¬"re on a budget as you can get some spectacular cocktails at cut down prices.

The food is quite pricey but on a Monday you can get a pizza a film and a glass of wine or a pint for a tenner! Bargain!

Phone: 0161 200 1500
This is an excellent bar located on the upper floor of the cinema on the corner of Oxford Road.
There is a healthy range of European premium lagers available on draught and in bottles. There is also a great selection of reasonably priced cocktails (look out for the happy hours to make the most of these) and is also great for fresh soft drinks and coffees/hot chocolates.
The atmosphere is always good and itâ¬"s a great place to stop off and chat before visiting the cinema or the theatre. There are loads of tables and a few sofas which make it a good place for a group conversations.
The food is also quite impressive ⬠mostly serving simple platters and salads. The tour-de-force though are the stone-baked pizzas, which are very much like Feliciniâ¬"s (across the road) but at about half the price

Phone: 0161 200 1500
The Cornerhouse manages to fill the hole left by larger cinema complexes. The programme at the cinema is well thought out and niether too obscure nor to mainstream. The cinema provides a great experience in a long but large auditorium with great sound. The Cornerhouse is also home to visiting exhibitions and a bar / restaurant and shop. The bar, both upstairs and down, has a great range of wines and beers and the food is quite reasonable. There are often meal and cinema deals which beat the usual Pizza Hut cinema deals. The bar also hosts DJs at the weekend and has been home to Andy Votel's evening B-Music.

If you want to see the mainstream films, go to UMC, Odeon or Showcase; if you want something a bit different, go to Cornerhouse.

The cinema itself is in a separate building to the arthouse (which I have never been in and you'll have to read other reviews about). For an alternative cinema it's not a bad size although it's still on the small side. It's also directly on the main road (where all the buses run) and right next to Oxford Road train station.

A lot more "audience participation" than your typical teppanyaki, so maybe best to go in a small group rather than a couple if this would scare you, although chances are this was just the chef we had. Sushi was excellent, with a selection of sauces as well as just soy. Some interesting choices of dishes, e.g. teppanyaki duck with raspberry sauce, as well as more "normal" ideas. If teppanyaki's not your thing, you can choose to sit at the sushi and noodle bar instead, although you get both if you sit at the teppanyaki counter. Prices high, go if you're looking to impress someone or if you're feeling rich!

Edit: I have been back since and not got teppanyaki - one thing to note is that it's REALLY REALLY loud. You don't notice this so much when you're participating in it but when you're across the other side of the restaurant trying to have a conversation it's a tad more annoying!

How long have you lived in this country? Pathetic.

You know who you are. You people who believe the strange and mystical lands north of High Barnet are nothing more than fairy-tale worlds of cloth caps, whippets and pints of mild. Well have I got news for you.

I would like to point you in the direction of the numerous reviews provided by my good chum Niggle as evidence of what a fine northern city like Manchester has to offer. I will also provide some evidence of my own about this lovely little spot known as Odd Bar.

I like bars that play good, but slightly off-the-wall music. Check. I also like bars frequented by attractive ladies. Check and check. I also like bars that feel a bit quirky, daring to break free from shackles of mainstream. Check-diddly-check-check. I like a bar where you can get a cosy seat on a Friday night, talk to your buddies over a few pints and watch the assorted human traffic bubble and boil the night away. Check. I love a bar where you can go for a Jimmy Riddle (this is men's only by the way) and laugh your socks off at a grafitti class war on the walls of the gents (if you're not sure what I mean, typical exchanges start with a mindless slagging off of 'artsty-wankers' scrawled by a butcher called Lee and are followed by numerous witty retorts penned by the middle-class uber-trendies). Check mate.

Yes, this place has a lot going for it. So why not 5 stars? Easy. It suffers from the 'London-wannabe' syndrome that is fairly common in provincial boozers. This manifests itself in two key irritating ways. Firstly, they for some reason feel that they can charge what they like for drinks because it's on the trendy edge of proceedings. I'm talking £3.20+ for a pint here, which oop north is downright extortionate. Secondly, they tend to be frequented by a pretentious bunch of fashionista types who specialise in 'look-at-me' and 'I'm-so-out-there' type noncing/flouncing. Still, both negative factors are not terminal, expecially the second, which usually adds a lot of comedy to the sights and sounds.

All things considered, one of the best nightspots in Manchester, in my humble opinion. Evidence (if it were needed) that life beyond London is possible and can even be quite enjoyable. Try it....ya might like it.
