People from Reading will be familiar with the sister restaurant - the London Street Brasserie. The Crooked Billet does a very similar menu, but in a fantastic environment. My particular favourite is the Venison with haggis. It tastes amazing.

The only downside of the Crooked Billet is the parking - it can be a struggle to fit your car in to their overcrowded car park as the place is always absolutely full. From my experience, booking is recommended, especially when driving out in to the sticks.

Tags: french, british, business, expensive
Nice grillI went to the Cerise really wanting to like it. It's in a nice location, and the menu on the web site looked fantastic. The restaurant itself is very tastefully decorated, and the staff are good, taking their time to look after you.

I had a great meal there, with one of the best steaks I have eaten in a long time, and a really nice goats cheese ice cream for desert - I was attracted by the unusualness, and wasn't let down. My only gripe though was the selection on the menu. I don't eat seafood, and I am not too partial to offal. Unfortunately, about 75% of the menu was seafood or offal, and out of the remainder, all that I really fancied was the steak - which, lets face it, is a bit of a boring cliche. I like to try new dishes (just not seafood or liver), and I am always a bit let down when steak is the only thing that I fancy on a menu. That said, though, it really was a good steak.

Overall, well worth a visit, but it's not going to be at the very top of my list.

Tags: standard pub food, mature
Poor quality foodWe ate here on a Tuesday lunch time. Three of us ordered the "special" pie, and it was obvious that it had been reheated at least once - possibly twice. The crust was black and solid. Also, one of the children's meals arrived on a plate so hot that he literally burned himself on it - big red marks on his fingers. Restaurants must realize that plates straight from the oven are not acceptable for child's meals.
