Along with the old favourite of the Tai Tung Chinese restaurant is this Vietnamese gem. Go into the centre up the stairs and at the back you will not be disappointed. On a Sunday if the queue is too much for Dim Sum downstairs go and try the £14.95 Vietnamese Steam Buffet and steam your own food at your table. A wonderful experience!

Website: http://www.jackinthegreen.uk.com/
Perfect Lunch StopI discovered this place quite by accident when trying to find a suitable place for lunch on a drive down to Cornwall about six or seven years ago. What a gem! Since then I have used it each time I've gone down to the West Country.

This has to be one of the best gastropubs in the country with quite a good wine list. Since I have started using it, it has won many awards including a Michelin Bib Gourmand, so I obviously am not alone in raving about this place.....

www.jackinthegreen.uk.com

Website: http://www.gidleigh.com/
Simply StunningApproached down a very long winding drive off the road. You finally round a corner to be met by a beautiful old country house. The restaurant is part of a hotel but is open to non residents and Micheal Caines provided me with nearly my finest culinary experience only beaten by "Ramsay". This place richly deserves its two Michelin stars and I wouldn't be surprised for it to make it to the three the next time the list is out.

Upon arrival we were taken into a fine sitting room for drinks and canapes. We then went into a bay window area overlooking the lovely garden and sat a table that felt like we were in our own private dining area. The food was sublime, one of my dining mates being reduced to tears by his steak it was that good, and the wines were divine. I would recommend chosing the cheese as this was truly great. The big surprise is that it was less than £60 a head, true it was lunch and two of the usual big drinkers, myself included, were the designated drivers (the only down side being the out of the way location meaning someone has to drive unless you stay at the hotel.......now there's a thought for the future)and we chose the prix fixe menu as it was Easter Sunday, but nevertheless it was astonishing value for the experiece that we had.

If you are down in the West Country give it a try you will not be disappointed.

Here's hoping for a lottery win.

However, Ramsay is the best place I have ever eaten - period. I can see why it's got those three little Michelin stars. I went with eight mates for a 40th Birthday treat. We had to have the tasting menu. Eight courses of delight followed! My taste buds have never thanked me so much. The wine list was reasonable too with some good finds for not too much, although there were one or two that I would have needed a second mortgage to even have considered. For the experience and the fact that we were treated like royalty for over four hours, I thought the £160 a head bill was very reasonable. Check out the massive list of different, mainly Belgian, beers that is found on the bar. I've spent some time in Belgium and Northern France and this place provides all the atmosphere of any beer establishment I've found there. Beer Circus, despite (or because of?) its location slightly away from the centre of Croydon, is often quiet, the decor is rather bare. Not many places as specialist as this one, so if you like your Belgian beer give it a look.

A lovely little hideawayThe best wine bar in Croydon. The Wine Vaults is part of the Davy's chain and is an oasis in the centre of Croydon's busy shopping area. Useful little meeting areas and function possibilities make this popular at times for celebrations, but you can find yourself one of only a handful of people on the place even on a Friday.
