You could be understood if you carried on walking after making assumptions about what it would be like, but if you do, you will be making a terrible mistake. The chef here is truly a master of the culinary arts and is so welcoming and friendly to his customers - not something i've experienced before! Service is lightningly fast and with a smile so that just adds to the wonderful experience you will have here. There is a good choice of dishes, all prepared in full view of the customers so that is reassuring too. The meat is so tender and just melts in your mouth!

Best to book at weekends as it's not too large inside and can get quite busy. The only downside is that it gets very smoky inside as the evening progresses but the food is delicious with all the standard mexican dishes as well as the odd special which are usually tasty. The deserts are tasty (in particular the fried ice cream is nice) and there is a good selection of mexican beers and tequila. Good value as well.

The new place is very impressive and well appointed but the staff can be a bit brisk with you and when it's busy there can be a wait to be served. Also the prices have crept up and it's no longer the brilliant value it once was which is a shame given there's so much more competition from good indians now. During the festival the cooking was a let down for the first time with a very watery korma but hopefully that was a one-off. Not visited this restaurant for at least a year and a half and was very excited to be going tonight ... oh dear.

Lets run through the experience for you.
Arrival ... not friendly "NAME!"
Drinks ... warm white wine and probably the worst Mojito this side of Hadrian's Wall.
Follow-up Drinks ... no idea as no-one asked if we wanted any more and we never saw our waitress again.
Bread ... stale (its only Friday surely you can get fresh bread)
Starters ...1. Thai fritters (tasteless minced tofu, soggy) 2. Humous & bread (bread stale again but the humous was fine)
Mains ...1. Tasted like Old E'Paso mix stuffed in a red pepper served with soggy chips) 2. A bad Indian curry in a soggy pancake with a warm cabbage leaf on the side filled with "something" - just like Granny used to make!)
Dessert ... didn't want to risk it
Service ... very bad (except for the waiting assistant who seemed to be the only person working)

I am giving this restaurant 1 star because it does not let me give it zero and that is being generous. It was so bad that seriously nothing could tempt me to eat there again.

The dishes are excitingly complex and the bold flavours and hearty portions will pleasantly surprise even the most robust Angus-fed Highlanders. The rich but not too filling hummus is a great starter, and should leave you room for the creamy risotto or a stuffed Portobello mushroom. Mains tend to be a tad pricey considering the lack of meat, but what did you expect from a bunch of vegetarian entrepreneurs. I prefer meat but I was quite surprised by the originalities of the dishes and the taste of cooked up vegetable ones. So when we finally found out this place existed we were in hog heaven, even if it meant something of a traipse across town. Don't be deceived by the deli-like appearance, that's just upstairs.

We went first on a Sunday. OH NO!! Closed. So we then tried a Saturday lunchtime.

The stairs are a bit perilous, especially for older folk, but the split level restaurant downstairs is airy and well laid out. Like the Marque, this doesn't have a huge menu but it's all very tempting and extremely good value. If you go at night, seemingly you get their delicious bread rolls (bestest by far in Edinburgh!) along with an amuse-bouche, but not at lunch. Shame. Food is still exquisite so we're now plotting a second assault.

The chargrilled lamb cutlets are to die for (Gursel sources his meat very carefully), and the moussaka is one of the best I've ever had. The service is so friendly, and Gursel cooks at the front of the restaurant, greeting everyone as they enter. The food is ridiculously cheap, but don't let that fool you (along with the dreaded word "kebab") that this is anything like a kebab shop. Everything I've eaten here has been the kind of thing I would have willingly paid twice as much for. I highly recommend it.
