Rating: 1.8

Location: Southbank Centre Square, SE1 8XX, London, United Kingdom

Phone: 0845 686 1122

Website: http://www.canteen.co.uk/
I visited here at about 10pm on Saturday 22nd November, after a friends concert. I had put the bad sevice down to a one-off, but having seen beejenny's review I felt I should say something too.

Once we were shown to our table we were ignored until we went and asked if somebody could take our order. While taking the order the waitress pointed out to us that she was tired and just wanted to go home. I appreciate that it was the end of what was probably a long shift, but it did little to make us feel welcome. This feeling continued throughout the meal with staff ignoring us unless we specifically called over to them.

The food arrived quickly, but was nothing to write home about. Haddock from the supposedly "market fish" menu was dry and uninteresting while a friends salt beef was a little tough. Although not terribly expensive, for the prices being charged I would expect something much better.

After we had finished eating, and having not been offered one during the meal, we asked if we had time to order another round of drinks. We were told that it would be fine and as it was getting towards last orders we decided to stay.

After a short wait, only half of the drinks order was brought over. We were told that the beer we had ordered had run out. The selection on offer being excellent, if a little overpriced, we picked up the menu to choose another. We were then told that the bar was closed. It was not until we pointed out that we had already ordered, and discussed the matter with two separate members of staff, that the rest of the round was served.

When the bill arrived I was amazed to see that a discretionary 12.5% servive charge had been included. Although I didn't hesitate to remove it, some of the people I was eating with felt uncomfortable with this. Adding a service charge is presumptious enough when the service is good. When it is as bad as I experienced at Canteen it is unforgivable.

But, when we visited two years ago (to see a show called "Tropicana") the experience was terrific. Tropicana was the show and the main task (at least for us) was to find out how to get in. The entrance to the "show" was through a door in a wall (very well concealed) in the side of a tube station. Once we figured this out we were escorted through the entrance into what appeared to be the locker room for the tube employees. Then we went through a locker (no kidding) and entered into an area where we could order (and get) drinks through a rather small window. After that we went down an elevator to the "vaults". The rest of the evening was a mixture of completely dark (entirely) and then rather extraordinary props and characters. Overall it was a great evening. We would do it again in a heartbeat. And now that the UK pound is coming down from the stratosphere we may very well be in London in a few weeks. We always look forward to our return. We love the U.K. and can't wait to get back.
