A nice modern bar, let down by the fact it can get a bit noisy at times, and hard surfaces means it suddenly gets loud.

But normally a friendly and comfortable bar with good staff.

It used to do great food, but a recent change of management also changed the chef. Meals now are not really that good.

There are a few Howies dotted around the city - they're a bit of an Edinburgh institution.

They serve fine Scottish brasserie fare and are reasonably priced. The one in Bruntsfield is small, cosy and right next to some similarly trendy yet comfortable bars suitable for pre- or post- dinner drinks.

Ok, so i didnt believe my friends when they said about a mosque serving indian food which closes when prayer time comes around. However is all true! I did feel quite old when i went to the mosque kitchen, the clientelle appears to be predominantly student based. That could be because of the price? Its so cheap! Also, don't expect fine cutlery or plates! Maybe i'm a bit old fashioned to expect in a restaruant to eat of plates that you don't throw away at the end of the meal! However the food itself is clearly why they are so busy. its delicious! and recommended based on that and that alone!

There really is nowhere better in Edinburgh to get a big breakfast and recover from the night before!

Lovely quaint atmospheric surroundings, friendly service, good menus and great food

Always has a good selection of warm, comforting grub - just what you need to keep the cold out (which is necessary all year round in Edinburgh!)

I've been for breakfast, lunch and dinner here (not on the same day though) and am never disappointed

Great mixed bunch of people make it an interesting place to people watch too!

Susie's is a bit of a vegetarian institution in Edinburgh having been here at least as long as my 18 years in town (under a previous guise as 'Seeds'). The standard of food at Susie's is pretty high with a good selection of hot dishes (hearty and familiar fare though nothing wrong with that), as well as a lovely selection of salads, excellent soups, and some scrumptious sweets. Ofcourse there are vegan options but it also caters for lovers of caffeine and alcohol too so its not completely 'worthy'. There isn't a massive amount of room but it makes the whole atmosphere convivial and warm. There are a fair number of students who use the cafe as well as those that work at the University but it attracts a broader crowd. Live music also makes a regular appearance here too. My only criticism is that the pricing system based on sizes of plates and additional amounts for salads isn't always that clear.

The vibe in this bar isn't to everyone's taste - its VERY clinical, with hard floors, hard tables and quite a few hard chairs too it feels more like a cafe.

Its a locals place on the whole but not unfriendly and its pretty handy to watch the footy on one of its four screens. The food however is actually good value for money and it seems to do 2 for 1 offers on weekend breakfasts.

It has wide sliding glass doors which front it and so it has loads of natural light. The selection of beers is pretty bog standard on the whole though I've seen worse.

Howies is an excellent choice for a meal that will definitely be good. As another reviewer said â¬Üdependableâ¬" and although Howies changes their menu monthly (a nice addition if you are a frequent diner) you can be sure that what is served is good quality. The service is always excellent and their wine list has a good selection. I would also second that going in and getting the pre-7.30 dinner deal is a great way to taste some great food at cheaper prices. A final tip is ask for a table in the main section of the restaurant as there is a small area at the front of the restaurant with a few tables which feels a little disconnected and feels like a bit of a corridor as everyone is accessing the restaurant through it.

Great value for money where you can be assured of getting a decent house wine to go with it at a resonable price. Plenty of room, staff very friendly and you're not rushed out of the place once you've finished, which is nice.

This is one of the best Pubs in Edinburgh, very small and cosy and popular. It's very popular with the local arty set and although usually a quiet relaxed place on the odd nights after a gig it's bursting at the seams. Some nights they have a DJ playing relaxed tunes and there's a very tiny beer garden down the stairs at the back.

This place is living old reputations when thier first restaurants might have been ok.

The service was grumpy, inefficient and could not care less basically. Wake up.

The food was only basic lunch order, but it was greasy and overpriced. The meat was fatty and poor quality. The standard of cooking is a joke and i wonder how they can get away with it.

Dont bother.

the burgers here are so good and now they offer free sides with every burger, so me and a friend went here both got a burger, shake and a side for just Â£10 each and i was full til the next day.

My experience of eating at Howies was during a Xmas lunch, where I appreciate it is a busy time of the year, but for me the food all tasted ready made and re-heated. It was unfortunate that it did not live up to the hype.

Will I try again with so many to choose from in Edinburgh? I honestly can not say.
