Rating: 4.5

Location: 103 Hampstead Road, NW1 3EL, London, United Kingdom

Phone: 020 7387 4064

Website: http://www.mestizomx.com

Tags: lively, good value, mexican
Mestizo is a good place to go any time of the year if you're looking for authentic Maxican cooking and and an enormous range of excellent tequilas. However it may be worth saving up your first visit for one of their special occasions. During September they often have a week of menus from different parts of Mexico, where you can sample a huge range of dished you won't find anywhere else in London, or possibly in Europe, and be sent on your way with a gift of mole sauce or a jar of chilis. For The Day of The Dead (November 1st) the restaurant is decorated in suitably ghoulish style, complete with an alter where you can leave offerings for your dear departed gran/Uncle Bob/tabby cat.

However if you do book for November 1st, make sure you get a table upstairs. I made the mistake of booking a party a couple of years ago and got a table in the basement with bright lights and no party vibe. The ground floor is much more atmospheric, so much so that you can quite forget you're on the Euston road with buses and ambulances whizzing past outside!

You can choose from two different menus, one for the starters and main courses and one for antojitos and tacos. As a greedy person I find their tacos a bit small, so I go for the main courses. The mole poblano hits the spot every time. Do start with a tequila cocktail (the bartender I think knows every combination) and the house red is good value if there's a crowd of you. However you may need to be patient with the staff, who usually seem to be relatives of the manager and newly arrived in England. Speaking Spanish helps if you want to order quickly.

Finally, if you're coming up from Warren Street and you think there can't possibly be a restaurant on this stretch of Euston Road, just keep walking and you'll find it (left hand side).

This is NOT your usual overpriced-taco Tex-Mex restaurant (ahem Crazy Homies). It has some of the best and most authentic Mexican food I have ever tried outside of Mexico.
For Mexican Independence week (Sept 15) they had a special menu with some of the most exquisite plates... think 24hr slow roasted lamb.
That and amazing tequila and margarita selection make this one of my favorite places in London. They also have a "club" downstairs that plays Latin Pop and seems to have quite a following on Thursdays.

Good looking place which is comfortable with friendly staff.

Food is always fresh and a good standard. They also do a brunch with a Mexican twist which is worth a try. Lots of Margaritas on the cocktail list (too bad I hate tequila!). I have never seen it very full but it has not been in the area very long, if they can keep up the standard they should do well.

They have a big screen TV upstairs although I have never seen it on. I think you can hire out that area for private parties.

This place is more upscale than your average Mexican restaurant, you wont see any cheesy sombreros or striped wall hangings here. Magic is good word to summarise Mestizo, for all it's attributes are unexpected for such an off the beaten track area. Authentic Mexican food that drove Hatti to subconciously impersonate a gluttonous Mexican mama and a dashing drinks menu, dressed to kill.
