Tags: relaxed, excellent pub food, traditional pub, friendly
Pure QualityWe visited today for a soup lunch, absolutely superb.

We both had the pea and ham with a slice of crisped pancetta on top and herby croutons. This was accompanied by warmed wholemeal herb bread and high quality butter. We both agreed ..yum..yum.

The building dates back to 1736 and has benefitted from tasteful but sympathetic repair through careful modernisation. No evidence of those 'refurbishment' projects is yet to be seen - thank God !

On entering the pub and looking left, you're immediately aware that this is not a pub in the country that does food, it's a proper restaurant with a bar and seating to the right of the entrance that's quite separate. The restaurant was fully prepared for the lunchtime service at 11:45 with properly laid tables using real linen and quality cutlery.

The menu, wide, imaginative and not ordinary pub grub. Definitely what you would expect to find in a good restaurant WITHOUT the associated price tag but just slightly above the pub-grub level.

As for the car park, another little bonus here, stunning views overlooking the Arun Valley and within sight of Arundel Castle.

Tourists and casual visitors, not easy to find but if you're visiting Arundel, it's better than anything to be found in and around the town, more than likely cheaper and far better quality.

We will visit again for those special occasions in the year and when it's just a case of "lets spoil ourselves" !

ps, take your camera !

Phone: 01903 200388
Quality and Value For MoneyWe often stop here for coffee and croissant when in the town centre and it really is something a bit special in terms of what they do as a small Italian bistro and wine bar/restaurant.

By day it's a licensed cafe bar offering those delicious panini and light Italian lunches but they also do a 2 course set menu lunch for £7.50. I'm told locally by other people that they are superb dishes. We have not tried these yet but will soon.

Mid afternoon is time for wine (enormous choice) and the olives come free. Something previously unheard of in Worthing !

By night, a full a la carte menu in the restaurant is available with no set closing time. Again, we have not tried this yet but the place is almost full every night. The outside seating is superb in fine weather.

For a business that's been here for several years now and grown steadily under the same Italian owner and his family, I suspect new standards are being set locally.

My wife tells me it's also very popular with the theatre goers who visit The Pavilion inside the pier. I suspect this is because of their flexible approach to closing times.

Tourists, 200 metres west of the pier, inside the cul-de-sac on the left.

Phone: 01903 212455
Quality and Value For MoneyWe stopped here for the first time today for a light tak-away lunch on the beech after shoping. Something of a surprise awaited us from this superb little family business that's been here since 1974. Whilst the young chap was preparing our chips, I asked if I could try one and he of course said yes. Wow...some flavour so I enquired what type of potato they are using and he said they only use new potatoes as they have no 'eyes' or black spots. These are then cooked fairly fast at high temperature which prevents the chips soaking up oil, makes them crisp on the outside, soft and floury on the inside. This must be a good technique as there was no lingering smell of deep frying. It was also noticeable that the customer area was spotlessly clean. A good sign as I arrived towards the end of the lunchtime service.

Tourists, very competitively priced and high standards. Located about 200 meters inland from the beech just past the Tex garage and next door to the SPAR shop. Free parking on the west side of Heene Road.

Village Life and Value for MoneyPossibly one of the best country pubs in south west Surrey, quality home cooked food, decent wine and real ale selection coupled with reasonable prices have made this a destination pub for many.

Tourists, it's located on the south side of Dunsfold Aerodrome - birthplace of the Harrier Jump Jet and Top Gear productions. I'm not sure what the criteria is for such an award but it's nice inside without being too modern or 'over-the-top' in decoration.

I was also impressed to see immaculate gents toilets - not something to be found in abundance anywhere !!

On the food side, my wife had the chicken liver pate with Cumberland sauce and I had garlic mushrooms with blue cheese dip. Both were accompanied by a light salad that was freshly made and very good by pub food standards.

Entertainment here is interesting too as they do afternoon and evening bands of a wide variety. Unusual this time of year so they are obviously quite busy.

Price, two drinks, two decent size starter portions - £11.10. Excellent value as it's only 150 metres to the shoreline.

Tourists, parking is behind the pub but no restrictions appear to apply at the front - but - check first !

Generally speaking, the town is now a wide mix of old and new with fascinating history - not the least - that famous astrologer, Patrick Moore lives locally.

One of the better south coast communities by some measure and you can still buy local fresh crab on the seafront. CautionMy wife and I visited this pub just after Christmas, not bad but not from the 'top-drawer' so to speak.

It's located in one of the prettiest spots to be found in West Sussex just below Goodwood Racecourse and east of Singleton village.

We had vegetable soup, not bad but it tended to lack depth of flavour but the bread was nice.

However, two things irritated me. The first was the price and second the portion size - Big for the former and small for the latter. I think it amounted to about £4,50-75 per portion. Put simply, it's a pub that charges restaurant prices because of its location.

Tourists, caution.
