Completed originally in 1842, it was the first purpose-built railway pub. The Brunswick itself has been painstakingly restored and transformed into an establishment favoured by many discerning drinkers, with excellent commitment to real ale - some of which it brews on the premises.

It's the natural place to pop into after a long train journey from North, South, East or West to slake one's thirst. So many great features and a real passion for ale. In 2001, it was voted UK Beer Pub of the Year.

I love it for so many more reasons than simply the gorgeous food. The setting is distinctive - very Oxford; a 17th century merchant's house tucked down an alley off The High. It's old and creaky, but effortlessly comfortable.

It's bustling and popular, so perhaps not the perfect venue for a romantic meal (although I've had some special evenings there) - but the lighting is subdued and the service friendly and discreet. The Kueytiew Phat Thai Jay is very yummy.
