Phone: 020 7836 0239
As one of the other reviewers has noted, Food for Thought is a London institution! From the outside it is a tiny restaurant in Neal Street, but the whole basement is in use. Traditionally, you queue upstairs to take food away, and queue down the stairs (and the queue at lunchtimes always reaches down the length of the stairs and along the street) to eat at the benches or on cushions downstairs.

This is a vegetarianâ¬"s paradise (they serve only veggie food), but is also a delicious experience for meat eaters. Every day there are 2 or 3 different soups, 3 main meals, and a salad, plus 2 or 3 scrummy desserts. The menu changes each day. You can have anything you like for less than £5, but plan to spend more if it is your first visit, go when you are hungry and try a dessert as well!

In essence it is a bar with a full size cinema screen that has a varied and interesting programme and an audience that is interested in what's on and buzzy and chatty the rest of the time. The food they serve is okay, possibly the weakest thing, though both food and bar service is friendly and helpful. Its a quirky bar / restaurant with lots of odd antiques and objects lying and ahnging around. The Garrison offers a fantastic range of beer, ciders, wines and spirits. Much better than most bars in London. The pub is small and it can get busy but it always maintains a chilled atmoshpere. It's best to call and book a table or an area to sit. The food menu is great if you wish to have a meal. Its not a big meun but it covers all the areas and the food is great. I prefer to drink at the Garrison rather than having a meal, but overal its a lovely atmospheric quaint restaurant / bar and gets the thumbs up from me.

It's incredibely popular with local office and shop workers and has many regulars.

On ground level there is a take away counter, behind which you can see staff cooking up fresh pots of lentil curries and spinnach soup and all other kinds of healthy dishes. Every day they serve a mixed salad which I would totally recommend - it normally comes with couscous, pasta, or potatoes so is quite filling. Fresh homemade bread is also available and is often still warm, tasting like it's just come out of the oven.

Prices are good value, especially for central london. A mixed salad and large chunk of fresh bread costs about £3.70.

Downstairs there are tables where you can eat in, although I never have myself. It always looks very crowded and claustrophic.

Also, bear in mind that queues can be long during the lunch hour - often spreading some way down Neal street, so it's best not to go there if you're in a rush. It's alot quieter before 12.30 or after 2pm.

I'm very glad I disvoered Food for Thought. It offers a tasty, healthy alternative to the monotony of yet another lunchtime sandwich.

On the good side, the food is nice, not exceptional but fine, though my boyfriend found his pie far too strong tasting and the staff are very attentive despite being really busy. The other side is that you cannot book, and have to wait in the corridor or bar where you are mostly in the way. However once you get your table, it is well worth it and is reasonable in price too. I didn't find that there was enough food though and that the tables are very close together. We were placed right on top off another couple.

Set in a good acre of sooty disused railway arches and long-forgotten brick vaults underneath London Bridge station, Shunt is a completely unique experience and well worth the effort finding it (it's almost invisible from the outside). Drinks may be nothing special, and they didn't even serve food as far as I could tell, but you can have hours of fun just wandering through the grimy urban spaces, hiding in the shadows or dancing in the spotlights. There's nowhere else like it.

I couldn't think of a more perfect venue. Massive space (with hidden nooks and crannies so pick how loud/busy an area you want to be in), performance, live music, art, pinball machines, cheap booze and even a truck with chairs on the tray to sit in. I actually passed about 30minutes pretending to drive this truck and honking the pretend horn - but this isn't compulsory although it does speak volumes about how much of the aforementioned cheap booze I may have consumed.

It's the sort of place you could take a jaded Hoxton-ite and actually get an impressed look out of them.

We went through a little door in the wall of the tube station only to find ourselves in what looked like a London Transport staff room complete with Tube staff reading The Sun. From then on, the evening just got stranger and stranger as we were led into the vaults.

Anyway, that was the show and now there's the bar. I guess it's run by the same team who put on Tropicana because it's got the same quirky feel to it with quite a lot of the theatre too.

If you're looking for something fun and different then you won't find much better than this. Great space, great place.
