Great, cheap vegetarian food in Soho by chinbergs

Review by chinbergs

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
This place is especially great for vegetarians who want to get some late night takeaway food for their journey home after a night out with some drinks.

They have plenty of salad, falafel and pita options, which are all tasty and good enough value.

Their chips are great though. I love their chips! They're always really hot and fresh. Always! And they taste really really good. The portion size is good; they're wrapped in a foil packet to stay hot; and you can pile on the ketchup or garlic mayonnaise too.

The food tastes nice, is fresh, good value, and vegetarian. Great!

This place is always busy at nights, often scooping up the drinkers and the drunk. But it's always been friendly and lively in there, never too messy. I'd definitely recommend.

I was so pleased when I found out there's not one, but two in Soho! They seem to open pretty late aswell so is perfect for grabbing something quick when you get the munchies on the way home from central.

Not a great place to take a date though, as it's lively and packed with not many tables. Good for a take away snack!

Maoz Falafel by Glen_Bailey

Not much to go on while walking around Soho on the same day as the Chinese New Year celebrations.

But, a phone call to a friend with googling powers at finger tips, a mention of Maoz, and they're all "Oh yeah, that place!" So armed with an address and my A to Z (I'm not from here) and off we go.

Get there and it's packed! A good sign! When we get inside it's not too clear the procedure of ordering or where the line begins/ends, but hey! We found it, we were happy.

After finding a table and a 4th chair, we happily wait while enjoying the remarkable looking food that keeps appearing. Green and black olives, marinated mushrooms, delicious looking sauces etc, and before too long our own little wholemeal pita packets - which came pre-loaded with fried eggplant and little falafel packets (you get to choose if you want feta as well).

We all filled ours with a bit of everything, leaving them practically overflowing with goodness, and I choose the corriander sauce - which reminded me of a great thai dipping sauce - delicious!

The food was great and more than what we expected and left us with the post food silents. Then the "Oh wow that was good"'s started, for at least 5 minutes.

For around £4 each, we had our fill of healthy, tasty vegetarian food! And I only went up twice!

I'll be recommending this place to my vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends alike.

We left yelling (it was still busy) out to the guys behind the counter "Thank you so much that was great!" - too which they were cleary appreciative, and left on our merry ways.

Falafel that was moist and delicate, humous that was so tasty that I literally had to tell my dining companion to stop saying it or I would strangle her, a fresh salad bar with my personal fav of fried cauliflower, chunky chips, and if that weren;t enough, the Maoz boys are always flirty and entertaining...all for under a fiver.

But for a reason.

Maoz, omnipresent in Amsterdam, has been feeding hordes of tourists, Old Compton St regulars and local office workers for a few good years now, and its main attraction is falafel.

Deep fried - just like their fantastic chunky chips - it actually tastes better than it sounds and in fact looks healthy. Not sure why. Maybe because you can top up your meal with an assortment of veggies, olives, couscous and sauces. But don't fool yourselves - it still is fast food. At £3-4 a portion it's a fantastic alternative to your lardy burger or dodgy kebabs though.

Just don't go there with a full bladder. The toilets are, well, equally cheap....
