Review by joslyoung

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
S'funny, because years ago when I used to come here a lot (I had an expense account then - those were the days) this was always somewhere I thought of as quite expensive, and yet on a recent visit after a long absence, I was surprised to find that the prices were actually quite palatable. I suspect that that's because everywhere else has just caught up...!
The food at Bam Bou is excellent. It doesn't necessarily leap out at you from the menu as being different or better than any of the other asian restaurants that have proliferated around it in recent years, but what they do Bam Bou just simply does better. Its duck dishes are particularly good, and the salads (though it seems a little dour to order a salad with so many other mouthwatering dishes on offer) are really worth a go. They're unusual in flavour and really inspire you to try different flavour combinations at home in your own cooking - to me, a restaurant that inspires you to try and recreate dishes at home is absolutely on a winner.
The coconut rice, similarly, is the best I've ever had, and goes brilliantly with the poultry and ginger main meals on offer. The portions are not enormous but this is to be expected and isn't resented; Bam Bou is very far from the pile it high, sell it cheap philosophy of the Gerrard Street fare not too far away, and is all the better for it.

Brillant Bam-Bou by Litro_K

My. God. The food here is to DIE for. We had such a fantastic meal here, I'll definitely be going back. It's one of those places that is great for special occasions- it won't disappoint.

The har gau are highly recommended, as was the vegetarian curry, and the pan fried black sea bass. Everyone around the table was rapturous about the coconut rice. And the desserts? Chocolate spring rolls? I mean come on. They must eat those in heaven.

It really isn't all that expensive, either. And the staff are perfect- composed, polite, efficient, but they make you feel a bit special. I loved it.

I admit that I'm not a food connoisseur but the food really was amazingly good. Especially for the price.

The Peppered beef fillet with kow choi & shaoshing was quite possibly the best beef I've ever tasted. An all-round brilliant restaurant with a great ambience.

I, for one, will definitely be going back!

Please note: 50% off the food bill (A maximum of 4 people can dine with 1 Taste London card)
Bam-Bou is located in a Georgian town-house, elegantly furnished throughout in French-Vietnamese style with vibrant colours, teak furnishings and colonial claddings. There are two dining rooms, on the ground and first floors, a variety of hideaway lounges for private dining and a decadent upstairs bar for enjoying some of Bam-Bou´s exotic cocktails.
The restaurant belongs to Caprice Holdings Ltd along with Le Caprice, The Ivy, J Sheekey, Daphne´s and Rivington Grill restaurants so is from extremely good stock.
Head Chef Gary Lee has redesigned the restaurant´s South East Asian influenced menu, breaking away from the formalities of the European dining format and encouraging a sharing approach.
The menu naturally fuses ingredients, preparation and presentation from Thailand, China and Vietnam. The cookery is typically light but driven by herbs and aromatics. The complexity derives from the simple layering of flavours, textures and temperatures whilst the ingredients remain distinct.
The wine list has been compiled to complement the food and features a wide selection from around the world. The waiters will gladly assist with wine selection to ensure guests get the best combination.
Limited alfresco dining is provided on the bamboo-lined terrace at the front of the restaurant affording views of Charlotte Street.
Chef´s Speciality Dish:
Seared Scallops, sweet pork & pickled choy shoots
