A great favourite for a "status meeting" or a client lunch, Hardy's is a Marylebone institution and rarely fails to deliver top notch French food and ample amounts of wine.

The staff are brilliant, keeping control of boozy celebrations whilst making you feel like it's actually a bar.

In terms of the food, I've always chosen their fillet steak, cooked as rare as possible. It's always been good apart from turning up medium on one occassion.

The wine selection is excellent and it's great to sit outside in the summer. The sun sets straight down Dorset Street and makes a great spot to relax. I gather there is a new chef of late here (?) and the food was certainly very good. I came for lunch with my spouse. I had a delicious, light pumpkin salad to start with, whilst my spouse had cauliflower soup of the day - happy slurping noises, so took it that this went down very well too.

To follow I had the House fishcakes which come with a poached egg on top and hollandaise sauce, the whole atop a bed of green beans. It seems this is a favourite House dish, and I can see why. My spouse had a very generous portion of the Special of the Day: pumpkin risotto (must be the pumpkin season ...)which was also good. My spouse was very fond of the hamburgers here, and said it is the one pity that the new chef has not kept this on the menu (please chef, can we have it back?).

The ambience is very genial and the staff friendly and helpful. When our bill arrived including a charge for my starter salad as a main course, this was corrected quickly, with apologies and no fuss. The pace of service was just right - particularly important at lunchtime when time is limited.

It was one of those chilly September days, and the restaurant is located on the non-sunny side of the street. I found the room cold (to the extent it took the edge off my enjoyment of the meal), but perhaps it warms up when the rooms are full (it wasn't very busy that day).

The restaurant is located in a quiet street. The tables are reasonably well spaced, so you don't have to share your conversation - as can happen in so many London restaurants.

After reading the reviews on TrustedPlaces about Hardy's, I decided it sounded like the perfect venue to meet a friend for dinner. We ate in the "intimate non-smoking restaurant" section and loved the warm atmosphere, along with the friendly service.

We both had the Rib eye steak with chips and bearnaise sauce. Although the steak was smaller than expected, it was cooked perfectly and was very flavoursome. The chips were pretty good too. A tasty bottle of Australian Shiraz was a great accompaniment.

Being chocolate lovers, dessert was an easy choice - we both had the Chocolate Pot with walnut praline. Yum - well worth returning for. I like this place a lot. It has an unfussy, uncluttered and unpretentious setting but genuinely tasty food that brings me back time after time.

It has a individual and family feel to the restaurant that sets it apart from many overly neat and formulaic types. This is a lot of the charm for me.

Not much more to say. I wasn't sure how to categorise the food as it seems to be a relatively modern mix of English and European style food. I had a read of the website and it confirms that this is how to describe the food, so I wasn't way off. Whilst I have it, here is the link:

The ideal setting in a quiet Marylebone street also gives Hardy's restaurant a bit of noticeable extra charm.

Hardys has been a St Marylebone favourite for around twenty years. They may have got a new cook recently because in the last few months the food has become much more tasty. They do a really good lunch with plenty of choices on the menu. Service is good and friendly but sometimes there is a bit of language difficulty. Reasonably comfortable but not opulent. Now gives the more famous Galvins in Baker Street a run for its money. And pretty good value by London standards.
