It has a great wine selection, a very decent cheese selection, and other bites that will work well with a fine bottle. Service is very friendly, it's a difficult place to leave! Especially if you've managed to get one of those lovely tables by candlelight.

The only downside is that it get's so busy! It can be impossible to get in the door on a busy night, however, there's ample space outside to indulge in your tipple.

Ah, Gordon's, it's a London institution, and, dare I say it, you're not a proper Londoner if you haven't been there.

It's absolutely perfect for de-stressing (well, after you've found a table, anyway!) and will leave you relaxed and hopefully a bit tipsy at the end of the evening. The biggest boon of this place is its fantastic wine selection - excellent value bottles and equally good vintages if you're willing to spend. They also serve sherry which is a refreshing change, too. The atmosphere is undoubtedly the second greatest attraction - it's got a candlelit, almost Victorian style essence to it, and if it weren't always very busy it would be pretty easy to stay all night in peace. Other wine bars tend to focus on young people, with music, noisy crowds, etc. but Gordon's seems to attract an older bunch which is good in my book! The bottom line: go here if you're after a relaxed evening - not a noisy night out.

The wine-only bar ensures that the usual lager jackasses aren't in attendence and the dark, candlelit cellars are conducive to getting close...

Beyond that though, it's one of the few places that serve Port, Sherry and other fortified wines by both the glass and bottle and what's more doesn't break the bank. The wine list in general is so wide as to be a little bit intimidating but the bar staff and knowledgable and helpful when it comes to ordering.

If the hot and sometimes sweaty cellar is too much, it's also got a nice outdoors area overlooking the park by Embankment tube. Food is served too and looks good, but I've not actually sampled it myself.

It's literally a shallow, sweaty cave underneath Charing Cross station which sells port, wine and cheese by candlelight, and has to be seen to be believed. They won't beleive it passes any health regs at all and that you are actually allowed in. It has character oozing from every crack and peeling of paint.
This is the best and last great winery in London. There is a dark dank under pavement cellars that you practically have to crawl down. Fantastic, you can drink port by the pint! If you get there and stay sober long enough you may even line your stomach with some fantastic cheese and bread, which I can heartily recommend. Saved me more than once. Great quality cheeses and breads and classically simple.
I love this place.

Their food is apparently really good too - I've grazed the cheese board a little and they were exceptionally well-kept, which bodes well for the rest of the menu.

It's a shame it's so rammed all the time, but that's the price of success I suppose, and somehow standing shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers whilst bent double under a strangely moist ceiling in semi-darkness is part of Gordons' unique charm. If you're heading here in the evening, pray for clement weather, when you can stand outside and maintain your own personal space to some degree.

The entrance to the wine bar is down some steep stairs and the seating area extends into a cave like area. It was packed when we stopped by for a post theatre glass of wine and this was a monday evening. It does get especially hot under the arches perhaps this is what makes it a good place for a date. The rickety tables and candlelight add to the ambience of this wine bar.

Wine is severved in measures from as small as 12cl, the house red was smooth and delicious. They do serve food, however we did not indulge.

This Fagin's lair of a wine bar is best enjoyed on a rainy afternoon, holed up away from all the loopy tourists, sipping a glass or ten by candelight. The last time I was here we made friends with a very cute cat, so bonus points there.
