If you're not an art expert or would just liek to learn a bit more, you can get an audio guide to take round with you (for which a fee applies) and that can really help to bring the pictures to life.

Whilst the majority of the gallery is free, they do also have paying exhibitions. You can often get into these for half price on a Wednesday night though, so it is worth checking.

There is also a nice cafe at the gallery where you can get soup sandwiches or tea and cakes. Very pleasant.

It's stuffed with some of the treasures of western art -- and it's free! As with many other places, I try to do little and often rather than one big visit -- my excuse is that I take my kids but actually, I can't digest too much beauty in one go!

Beautiful environment, beautiful pictures; the only trouble is that everyone else thinks so too, particularly when there's a big exhibition on!

Final top tip -- great place for Christmas cards (especially in the January sales!).

Late opening on Wednesdays afternoons, it is a great place to go and relax after work (especially if you work in the city centre). Outside, there is Trafalgar Square, always full of tourists. However, the interior is very peaceful.

Great old masters inside. Do not miss the Van Eycks (especially the Arnolfini marriage), the Christ by Piero della Francesca, the impresionists, the sunflowers by Van Gogh, the nympheas by Monet. A delight for every sense (for free).

There is so much fantastic art on showwhich is slightly overwhelming. I am not an art aficionado but I have found myself spending many lunch times appreciating their paintings by artist such as Raphael and Botticelli. The museum is completely free making it great for those on a budget but more importantly makes multiple visits possible
I myself feel that the floor plan is slightly perplexing if you are searching for a certain painting. The location is great as it is just off Trafalgar square and opposite the portrait gallery.

For anyone with an interest in art this place is brilliant and comes with the added bonus of being free!

The art on show ranges from many different times and styles so there should be something for everyone. For those not particularly interested in art there is still something magical about seeing in the flesh, images that have become part of popular culture and seen on postcards or posters. Who would not want to see a Van Goch up so close so you can see the thickness of the paint or a Monet that you may have seen the image of but never the real thing.

The gallery itself is huge and would probably take you a few hours to do it justice. Often there are school parties there with curators giving talks which you can listen to as you look at the paintings.

The gallery has a large shop where you can buy gifts and prints etc - you could always buy a postcard of one of the paintings you have seen to send to a friend!

I can't say how brilliant this place is and how varied the collection - it's free so what do you have to lose...you might just enjoy it!

It is in a fantastic location, literally forming on the sides of Trafalagar Square, so it is pretty hard to miss. And I donâ¬"t think you even have to pay to go in, so it is definitely worth going to. It has some wonderful works of art in there, my favourites are the Vermeer and the Velazquez but there is really a huge selection. I would definitely recommend visiting the National Gallery if youâ¬"re in the area.

The gallery has a huge collection of paintings from the 13th to 19th centuries, including Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Titian, Vermeer, Caravaggio and so many more. Itâ¬"s absolutely worth a visit ⬠especially if youâ¬"re already at Trafalgar Square itself, and since it is completely free there is really no excuse not to look around this really fantastic collection.

The Vanity Fair Portraits Exhibition, 1913-2008 was currently going on. It goes from 13 Feb-25 May, 2008 and it is worth seeing. There were great photographs of rock stars, movie stars, royalty, well-known people, that was very interesting. The other portraits were great too. We saw oil paintings of the royals, Christopher Wren, George Washington and others that were fascinating. The website for the gallery is www.npg.org.uk for more information. The tube stop is Leicester Square.

I would plan on spending an entire afternoon, possibly day at the
gallery. They have a check -in room for your belongings that looks very well attended and safe to use. We spent part of an afternoon and evening there. They are opened till 8-9pm on some nights.
Don't skip over this museum.
