The staff at Curzon Soho are brilliant. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful - and importantly for me, unlike most cinemas - they smile. A lot! There is a good range of films shown here and the concessions stand offers popcorn, alcohol and beverages that are very reasonably priced. There is also a bar and coffee bar in the building, offering different food, drink and cake options. This is a cinema you can come to as part of a whole evening, you don't feel like you've got to watch your step on sticky floors or that you are being ripped off. The membership options offer good value for money if you are going to come more than 4 times in a year - and actually, you might because the atmosphere here is so friendly and welcoming. I went tonight - and there was even a quiz, adding to a real 'community' feel! The Curzon Soho is one of the best cinemas in London for less mainstream, more arthouse and foreign films. In fact the whole Curzon chain ⬠there are cinemas in Mayfair, Chelsea, Richmond and more ⬠has a similarly good selection although the Soho cinema remains one of the best. This is currently my favourite cinema in London because it comes with a terrific cafe and lounge bar.

Arrive early for a film, buy tickets before the queues and choose drinks or cakes (usually both) from the delicious spread whipped up by the Konditor & Cook patisserie-cafe on the ground floor. The area around Old Compton Street is well known for its extravagant cake shops (eg Patisserie Valerie) and I like the way Curzon Soho have carried on the tradition by hosting this one. It's especially nice that K&C do lovely seasonal gifts like tiny easter cakes and clown ginger bread men (for the clown season!) which you can surprise your friends with.

Little note about the chairs and tables in this cafe - they're the high sort and they're so comfortable and kind of 'chatty'. And if you're solo, there's a great view for people gazing, because the cafe has glass walls.

Downstairs there is a spacious but cosy bar with lots of sofas which is perfect for intimate chats after the film. Curzon make a point of organising special events here. Presently they have a Joe Strummer exhibition downstairs where they've papered a whole corner of the bar with themed posters. There are lots of mini film festivals which give you a chance to catch extras above and beyond the blockbusters. I just missed a Q&A presented by cult Finnish film director Aki Kaurismaki :(
