I have been popping in this place for a few years, and still love it as much as the 1st time.I have bought a few whole cakes (for birthdays) and managed to get them home on a motorcycle even if it was slowly.

Thereâ¬"s absolutely nothing wrong with the service nor the ambience at MB. But that air of claptrap surrounding the food served rattles me senseless. How could they possibly charge £4.50 for a Mont Blanc pastry thatâ¬"s inferior to and cost the same as the Holy Grail version found at Angelina in rue de Rivoli, Paris. For cakes and pastries, youâ¬"ll find that theyâ¬"re better and cheaper at Amato in nearby Old Compton Street. The drinking chocolate was average.

The general consensus suggests that MB is a popular hangout with thespians, luvvies or students of artistic persuasion, if that rings true then they must all be loaded.

I know its rickety, small and cramped - even though its expanded to take over the building next door. Yet there's something distinctly Soho about this place. Not just because they held a Mighty Boosh exhibition here. With so many portraits of Bryan Ferry in a White Tux, you'd think you were hallucinating! Or the fact they let Noel Fielding doodle all over the walls! It's got that relaxed dufflecoat existentialist, arty Soho feel. I come here for the cakes, I come here for the tea and I come here for the atmosphere. I love that this place still exists, when everything else of any individuality in Soho is shutting down to make way for another chain cafe. The window shows off their great range of cakes and the proprietor always has a chat with me and gives each customer the personal touch, talking through the cake choices and making recommendations. It gets very crowded and very busy but this is part of the fun of the place and part of its charm. The service is quick and the staff are really lovely. Have been there for coffee and cakes a few weeks ago with a few friends. I love the decoration, it's quite original. As for the cakes I found them to be average and overpriced for the quality. Yes it's small, cramped, has uncomfortable seating and you are very close to the next table - however the window display has a host of quite fantastic sweet delicacies - swill any one of them down with a tea or coffee.

This place is just... spot on. Somehow I think it can bring anyone right in the mood that they are craving at the moment - you can be slightly cooky, gossipy, arty, continental... And if you dont feel like any of the characters mentioned above - it doesnt matter. This cafe has such a bit heart that everyone will feel perfectly at home, wherever they are coming from. A little French patisserie and tearoom founded in 1871, this charming Soho institution is a must-see. The proprietor, Michele Wade, runs the place in a place in a warm and friendly manner and creates a cosy, loving atmosphere. The shop window displays a wonderful selection of cakes tempting customers inside. The decor has recently become flamboyant with pink netting strewn across the lamp fitting as if a party is about to start. In its quaint interior a piano sits in the corner waiting to be played, the counter is centre stage and small round tables and dark polished walnut bentwood chairs are scattered about the room. The style of chair is based on Michael Thonet's 1859 Vienna Cafe chair , a design that greatly influenced cafes all over Britain.
Behind the counter is a fantastic display of oddments and pictures collected by Michele over the years and this adds to the tearoom's quirky nostalgic atmosphere.
All the cakes and pastries are baked on-site in the kitchen on the top floor, and alongside the kitchen is a little rickety room with more seating.
