I've only moved a few blocks away but my wasteline thanks me often. Surprisingly great food for a place open after the rest of Camden Town shuts down, and 5 nights a week you can see the French tinged rockabilly stylings of Danny Blue playing for hours out the back. He himself is one of London's greatest unknown treasures, as is the Marathon for the crowd of late night locals and visitors it houses and entertains every night.

Welcome to the Marathon Bar, Camden's hazy crazy last chance saloon! Is it a kebab shop, is it a bar, or is it the final resting place for Camden Town's die hard alcoholics and desperados? Herein you will find all manner of drunken cheerfulness and legendary French rock n roller Daniel strumming his geetar and skwawking his glorious way through Chuck Berry songs. They dance, they sing, they drink, they eat kebabs, they flirt until the wee small hours when it really is the end, unless you catch word of the evening's house party where a trip to the nearest offy in Kentish Town for a bottle of cheap vodka will gain you entrance and the debauchery will continue till god knows when.

It was a Sunday night, and we just wanted to find a place that would serve a beer after midnight. The place was packed with characters of every odd stripe. It was a noisy, roiling, vibrant hot spot. It wasn't jazz that night: a fellow resembling a zombie played boogie woogie Elvis tunes on a Gretsch turned up very loud. I had a cold beer, hot fries, and a lump of hash in my pocket. I was so happy I could have died.

Suitably, it finished to a completely bizarre place that I hadn't heard of until that night.

Marathon restaurant is the only place, as far as I know, that manages to combine a kebab shop with a live jazz venue at the back. Yes, that's right they sell kebabs and they have a couple of guys playing the sax at the back with about 6 tables around. You can grab a beer and the place is open till very late. It attracts the very best of Camden. At 3am the place was completely packed. All the tables and any floor area were full. More people were coming in as we were leaving at around 3.
The kebabs are excellent. They actually put real chicken in there, which tastes great. Was not that adventurous to go for the doner, but that looked pretty good too.

So, if you find yourself hungry or thirsty and feeling that you have to listen to some jazz too at 3 or 4am on a Friday/Saturday night then this is the place to go. It's an experience.
